The Duran Moore fight makes me wonder what would have happened if not for the thumb. people always bring up Duran's brilliance but NEVER bring up the thumb. I think Duran still would have won but this guy Davey was clearly hampered with his damaged eye being shut closed. Maybe that's why Hagler was so cautious with Duran.

I reckon so. There's no real bias, I like Duran almost as much as Williams; I have his signature and a four foot artwork of him on my wall.

I never saw any bias in your posts -nor do in anyone who defends their position reasonably. We'll be athritic and still typing our disagreement on this one apparantly but I will tell you that I have made an adjustment -I'd give Williams a better chance than Whitaker or virtually anyone else (someone hold Sweet Pea back).

Williams was interviewed a week before he died and was surprisingly sharp. Have you seen this interview?

The thing that is most remarkable about Joe Louis is his effectivness in rematches.

It seems that once he knew how you moved and boxed you were screwed.

Joe Louis was nothing short of proverbial in his rematches.

You could say the same about Robinson (re rematches) until he reached forty anyway.

Ike Williams considered his best performance to be against Enrique Bolanos111
"Thw third fight I fought the greatest fight of my life.I felt like I could have fought forever.Jack Dempsey was the referee that night.
I'd been beating him for four rounds, but the last punch was a right to the body. That,s the last punch I hit him with.He went down slowly. He was as knocked oput as any fighter ever was.
That's the fight that I would have bet my life on that I would have whipped any lightweight that ever lived that night, the last fight with Bolanos."
    Williams interviewed in Jan 1971

Great find. I'd choose the Montgomery over that one only because of the caliber of the opponent -and the degree of his inspiration. Ike hated Bobcat.

Don't think so; although I do have an interview from '86 or '87.

Ike said Montgomery fouled him,"I fought Montgomery. He knocked me out that night.no excuses.Maybe he'd have beaten me anyway. One thing,I felt he fought me very dirty. He's the only fighter that ever fight me dirty. And I was badly overtrained.I had a cold.Jesse Goss wanted me to postpone the fight ,but I wouldn 't do it.He knocked me out, with 11 seconds to go.Eleven seconds to go I was counted out cold,Montgomery ,he used his head on me,that's the way he fought me dirty and I was a naive kid then,I wouldnt fight him back dirty."The boxing Guild of managers blackballed Williams,he was Champ and couldnt get a fight.thats why he signed with Blinky Palermo,Ike said get me a rematch with Montgomery and I'll sign with you and Palermo did.
