This Sports Illustrated article came out 2/10/1964, two weeks before Cassius Clay
    beats Liston on 2/25/1964.

Make a copy for your reading and analysis at a later date. Some very good points
are made by the 4 fighters that are sometimes overlooked these days.

    "The four who baffled Liston"
Ominous in the background, Sonny Liston glowers down on a quartet of fighters who, when they met him, were not intimidated in the least. Here, from the left, are Marty Marshall, Burt Whitehurst, Eddie Machen and Jim McCarter. They tell how they stood up to the heavyweight champion and how he can be beaten

I guess sports illustrated could have also made an article about 4 guys that troubled Clay before the Liston bout----Sonny Banks/Cooper/Jones/ and 1 other guy. So take whatever stock you choose out of these kinds of things. Trouble is they almost always provide one side and never the other.

Great article....these fights were before Sonny became champ in 1962...yet the Liston people here say that this time period was when Sonny was at his best...really???

Just read thru it again. It would take all kinds of special to put any stock in it. More holes than Swiss cheese. Woeful.

Funny, I am not a Marciano fan and rate both of these guys in the 10-12 range but I think Rocky wears him down and stops him late....but I guess that is a seperate thread lol

Marshall got a split dec over Liston who was fighting with a broken jaw.Marshall had 26 fights under his belt Liston just 7. Liston knocked Marshall down multiple times in their rematch,in the 3rd fight Liston did not lose a round and Marshall ran away all night and no he didnt floor Liston in their second fight thats a load of crap that Marshall spread about , there is no mention of him knocking down Sonny in the fight report .Whitehurst was knocked clean out of the ring in the last round of his 2nd fight with Sonny, he was in the process of trying to get back in when the final bell rang saving him for a ko.You can see it on You Tube!
Howard King was stopped in both of his fights with Sonny,he quit in the 1st one and was ko'd in3 rds in the 2nd after being knocked down for an 8 count in the 2nd rd.
Liston beat Machen convincingly, nobody gave the fight to Machen.
Liston stopped DeJohn again no argument about it.
How the **** did any of these guys baffle Liston?
Only one of them beat him and that was when he was a green novice fight under the handicap of a broken jaw
and even then it was only a split decision.Liston beat him convincingly twice after. Liston knocked Williams out twice and was never near to being ko'd as that pile of crap says watch the fights!

    First fight report.
" Liston floored his opponent, Cleveland Williams of Houston, Texas, twice before referee Jimmy Peerless stopped it. The fight had been billed for 10 rounds, but odds were 3 to 1 it wouldn't go that far. Liston started slowly and Williams, who had lost only two out of 46 ring appearances, mixed in left jabs with right crosses and left hooks to pile up a lead and bloody the Philadelphian's nose. "We weren't concerned about the blood on Liston's nose." said his manager, Pep Barone. "It would take more than that to beat this fighter." Liston's handlers said they told him to wait Williams out and he did, but only until the second round. Sonny opened up then and peppered his foe with rights and lefts to the head. A barrage to Williams' head late in the round rocked the Texan and paved the way for the fatal third. In that round, Liston poured on more rights and lefts to the head and Williams went down. He took the eight count but when he came up, Liston was waiting with more of the same. Williams went down flat on his back, rolled over and staggered to his feet as Peerless stepped in to stop it."
ps Liston floored Williams twice in their second fight too.

Liston destroyed Zora Folley in 3 rounds!

"Sonny Liston, swinging his sledgehammer fists with devastating fury, knocked out Zora Folley in 28 seconds of the third round after battering him to the canvas twice in the second round of their scheduled 12-round heavyweight fight last night. Liston, 212½-pound slugger from Philadelphia, gave ground in the first round before he unleashed his dynamite-laden 14-inch fists that slammed Folley to the deck early in the second round and again as the round ended. Folley, 198½, of Chandler, Ariz., took nine counts on both knockdowns, the bell ending the second round saving him from the cold, calculating attack that finished him in the third stanza."

That article is a pile of unadulterated biased ****!
