Ray 'Windmill' White Jesse Ferguson 'Irish' Gil King Tarcisio 'Famosito' Gomez Paco Flores Randy Sandy
Since he was nice enough to host my family and spend an afternoon telling stories about his years with the O'Grady's and then as a trainer and matchmaker, I'll throw Tony "KO King" Gardner's name in the ring.
Another one under the right circumstances, that should've been champ. If they had found out about his allergy problem earlier, he definitely would've beaten Weaver.
Because he's the best fringe contender of all time. He had usually fallen out of the ratings when he would emerge again with a big upset.
I'm not nit picking, it's just that if you are rated for 4 out of 5 years, you are by definition a legitimate contender.
Jack Bodell Jose Luis Garcia Lorenzo Zannon Henry Cooper -I'm not sure it is fair to classify him as fringe. Randy Neumann Alberto Lovell John Dino Dennis Boone Kirkman Richard Dunn Pedro Agosto Henry Clark Stan Ward-always seem like he should have done more. Danny McAlinden Charlie Powell - someone I would love to learn more about. Howard ko Smith in my nomination for fringe contender poster child. . . Chuck Wepner!!!
Powell is a fascinating figure and a superb athlete. Probably hurt himself by switching sports so much, and skipping college. But if it pays te bills...
George Chuvalo. A gate keeper has reached his level. He is a guy not good enough to be champ but you get a shot at the champ if you can convincingly beat him. Only champions or fighters good enough to be challengers can beat them. A fringe contender is a good fighter who has also reached his level. He will get you a ranking even if he is unranked if you can beat him. Only contenders can beat them.
