This was also shocking news to me! I would have preferred that Gamboa stayed with his Cuban Coach Salas. I don't know what happened that they split cause they had wonderful results and relationship. It's like the old saying goes " don't fix it if it's not broken ".

While Steward is a very good trainer, I am afraid that he may want to change Yuriorki's style to a more defensive one and that will not work for Gamboa as he is used to having that " hurricane " offensive style all his life.

Only time will tell if it will work out or not. I still remember how Joe Goosen changed Casamayor's offensive style to a more defensive counter-puncher which worked against some but cost him 3 loses against Freitas, Castillo and Corrales for being too defensive minded.

Let's see how it goes, we should see how Gamboa looks in his next bout!

 

Yes, Casamayors lost those three fights but it was obvious that he was the better fighter who was too passive in too many rounds.
99 % of fights the best fighter win but not in those 3 fights and it was really not the judges fault.

 

Right, there's no doubt that Casamayor was too passive in those fights and being too defensive and too passive won't give you the victory in pro boxing. This is why I really like Gamboa's all out aggressive puncher style, yes he may get a bit wild and get caught once in a while but sooner or later he will get his punches in and when he does it's goodnight.

The only good thing that Goossen did for Casamayor was taking him to train with him in California as he saved him from the Miami bad party scene. But, if Casamayor would had a trainer like Salas and kept aggressive through all his pro career he would had defeated Freitas, Castillo and Corrales easily ( in his only defeat against Corrales, beat him 2 and lost 1 ).

 

That Corrales loss was highly debatable too . Peace .

 

Gamboa vs Rios?


Top Rank president Todd duBoef has recently spread the word that he would love to match Cuban phenomenon Yuriorkis Gamboa (21-0, 16 KOs) with hard-hitting WBA lightweight champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios (29-0-1, 21 KOs) sooner or later. “I have seen some tapes of Rios and all I can say is that Gamboa is ready for him anytime, anyplace”, says promoter Ahmet Oner. “Rios is an aggressive guy but I see nothing in his game to really shock Gamboa. It should be a good fight though so I say: Let’s get it on!”
