I think the best ones are Barrera and Socarras without a doubt. Socarras did have a very good amateur background, he didn't box in Cuba like the others but was Florida's Golden Gloves Champion and had plenty of bouts with a huge KO ratio.

Barrera was a beast in Cuba and is still young. Ugas is also one of the best prospects along with Dorticos and Mike Perez. Rances Barthelemy is also a very good one. But just as my friend Kid Cubano said, our Cubans have a very big dilemma when they come to this Country.

Like the saying goes, " only the strong survive " it can also be applied here but like this instead, " only the totally dedicated will succeed ".

I think that over 90% of the Cubans who defect have World Championship material, but the problem is that most don't get totally dedicated, get into the heathen Miami party lifestyle and many of them also defect too old after 30 years old.

Still, the record shows that whenever they really get serious they immediately start grabbing World Titles and produce World Champions but we have wasted some " serious " talents that never fully dedicated themselves.

Serious talents from the 90's that never made it include:

Ramon Garbey
Ramon Ledón
Jorge Luis Gonzalez
Mario Iribarren
Eliseo and Eliecer Castillo

Our Cuban ace Gamboa seems to be totally dedicated, let's just hope that he stays 100% on track!

The same applies now, we have a very big number of fighters but only a small group seem to be 100% dedicated. To be honest, I would be very happy if Gamboa, Rigondeaux, Lara, Solis and Mike Perez become solid World Champs! I would also love to see the others become Champs too but the others are just a question mark.

 

Yeah, I forgot Yuniesky G and Santana. Also very solid prospects!

Yes, they are in the hundreds. And if those " hundreds " come over here it would cause a Boxing Tsunami. Just exactly what I have been predicting for years. Many people don't know this but 95% of our Boxers are still trapped inside the Island. :twisted:

 

I think Gonzalez got smacked around by Kirkland in a sparring session... Dorticos is another that like t o party too much, Salinas, Franco, Socarras, Santana and Ramces seems to b 1005 dedicated....

 

Yes you mentioned Gonzalez party life. Lets hope He wake up BEFORE a fight instead of losing to an underdog. A Gonzalez in top motivation would beat a lightmiddle like Kirkland to pieces. In Cuba he was number 2 heavy losing by two points 14-16 to Acosta.

From lester proctor:Here are some guys I haven't seen, curious about their potential: Salinas, Rances, Santana, Consuegra, Collado, Luis Garcia.

Dont think heavy weight Consuegra get anywere. Probably the weakest of cuban heavies. The others : Salinas already in top 15 ranking.
Rances moving fast and probably in ranking soon, hard-hitting
Santana gonna move up to ranking impressing
Collado and Garcia talented but need to move on (out of Irland)
Do not think Luis Ortiz looked bad. Everybody else praise this guy

Yunieski is not a good prospect at all as you all think. He is subscribed to Bongo's night club, many of them are actually. And Yunieski is more bum than great, he recently got beaten up BADLY and humiliated by Kirkland in a sparring session. The video is so humiliating the dude should sue Kirkland for posting it in the internet.

Concerning Dorticos, I've hang with him, he's a cool kid, but he's also enjoying life right now, he won't get anywhere serious.

Whittaker tops Barthelemy in IBF eliminator for #2

Jr middleweight Charles “Killa” Whittaker (38-12-2, 23 KOs) scored a twelve round unanimous decision over Giorbis Barthelemy (25-9-2, 10 KOs) in an IBF junior middleweight elimination bout to determine the #2 contender on Friday night at the Miami Airport Convention Center (MACC) in Miami, Florida.

In other action, cruiserweight destroyer Yunier Dorticos (13-0, 13 KOs) scored a third round KO over Livin Castillo

 

Yunier Dorticos learned a lesson on boxing’s rough-house tactics and losing poise while maintaining his unbeaten record Friday night.

A Miami resident and native of Cuba, Dorticos scored a third-round knockout over Ecuador’s Livin Castillo in an undercard bout of a show at the Miami Airport Convention Center.

In the main event, Fort Lauderdale resident Charles Whittaker won by unanimous decision over Miami’s Giorbis Barthelemy. Whittaker (38-12-2) was the aggressor against the moving Barthelemy (25-9-2) throughout their 12-round bout but the fight featured repeated instances of inactivity. Whittaker won on two judges’ scorecards, 117-111 and 116-112.

Although he landed the telling punches during his brief cruiserweight fight, Dorticos risked disqualification when he hit Castillo with a punch behind the head in the first round. Referee Sam Burgos spared Dorticos the disqualification and deducted a point for the infraction.

“I was not going to let him bully me,” Dorticos said of Castillo. “From the beginning of the fight he was hitting me below the belt.”

Dorticos overpowered Castillo with straight rights to the head and right uppercuts in the second round. The taller Dorticos also landed effective combinations to the body, but after the bell ending the round, Dorticos landed a glancing punch to Castillo’s head.

Already having established his dominance, Dorticos continued to break down Castillo with unanswered combinations to the head. Burgos sensed that Castillo was unwilling to counter or defend from Dorticos’ shots and stopped the bout at 1:05 of the round.

The tension carried after the fight, when Burgos claimed that Dorticos hit him behind the head as the referee directed his attention to the Florida Boxing Commission’s table. Dorticos said he never hit Burgos.

Tom Molloy, the commission’s executive director, approached the ring apron and talked to Dorticos’ cornermen and his co-promoter, Luis De Cubas, about the fighter likely facing a fine for Dorticos’ actions.

“There was no reason for him to do that,” Burgos said. “He could have easily been disqualified in the first round but I allowed him to continue. Castillo could have gone down and not gotten up and that could have cost [Dorticos] the fight.”

The performance overshadowed Dorticos’ 13th consecutive knockout victory to start his career.

“He was uncomfortable to figure out at first but once I established my rhythm I knew I was going to finish him in three or four rounds,” Dorticos said. “I enjoyed exchanging with him from close range. That was delicious.”
