Garcia: I’m Gonna Steal Ugas’ Shine

Interview and photos by Bob Ryder

Holland, Michigan’s Juan (Johnny Garcia) took time out from his training to speak with Fightnews.com about his upcoming bout with Cuban Yordenis Ugas. The 8 round Ugas-Garcia bout will be the televised under card fight on Showtime this Friday under the Diego Magdaleno-Miguel Beltran, Jr main event. The telecast will emanate from the Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona beginning at 10 PM EST.

Thanks for speaking with fightnews, first do you prefer Juan or Johnny?
My real name is Juan but I prefer Johnny.

Your fight on the 23rd will be your first on national television. Describe your feelings.
I am real excited. We have had 11 weeks to prepare. I have an opportunity to show the world what I can do in the ring. This fight is going to open a lot of doors for me.

Have you seen Ugas fight? Did you notice anything in his style that you can exploit?
We had a chance to watch him fight on ESPN. He’s a good boxer, basic straight forward style. Not wild or awkward, he is gonna be right there. I won’t have to chase him. From what I saw I am confident I will win.

Both of you are undefeated at 11-0 however you hold an edge in KOs with 8 to his 5. Do you view yourself as the bigger puncher?
I don’t know. Can’t always judge by records. It depends on who we have fought. I do think though that I am the stronger fighter. We’ll see who has the punch when the bell rings.

You have never been past 6 rounds. Does the 8 round distance cause you any concern?
Not at all. I have sparred and trained hard. I have always been dedicated to my conditioning. If the fight goes the distance I will have no problems.

Ugas brings in the excellent amateur credentials, former Olympic medalist along with several international titles and as you mentioned has been on national TV. He has been getting the promotion. Does it bother you to be the underdog?
I love it! The fact that he has all the credentials will make this win all that much bigger for me. When I beat Ugas I’m gonna steal all his shine!

Ugas lost by SD last night, got robbed but didnt look good despite the KO.Garcia was wild, open and lack power and still Ugas was unable to get rid of him.His footwork was horrible at the beggining just standing there in front of Garcia.Later started moving and ducking more but was not throwing enough.
Ugas is not elite,i cant understand how he was cuban champ with that style.Besides i dont believe he has been properly trained.

I think you are right. I had very high hopes for Ugas but losing like that at the beginning of his career ( even though he got robbed ) and against mediocre competition doesn't look good.

There's no doubt, the Cuban Elites are Gamboa and Rigondeaux. Then comes Lara, Solis and others.

To be honest with you I think that the Cubans have a much higher level of both technique and dedication when they are in the Cuban amateur system because the Coaches and goverment officials really keep them " in check " but when they defect is when the problem begins.

Some of the Cubans just lose their dedication, focus and interest and just can't stay away from distractions in freedom, that's a proven fact! ;)

nice easy defence for El Chacal...

Then he'll probably defend against the winner of Quigg-Munroe who are fighting for the Interim strap in June

    SMH.... :roll::roll:

Read that many cubans get little time with good trainers. Just see them in the gym no attention when being out running some miles.
Ugas footwork not a new problem
