WBC #3/WBA #5/IBF #5 and WBO #10 jr middleweight Erislandy Lara won a hard-fought 10 round unanimous decision over Freddy Hernandez. The southpaw Lara (17-1-1, 11 KOs) won a majority of the exchanges between the two, beating Hernandez to the punch by landing short right hooks or left crosses to the head. Hernandez (30-3 1ND, 20 KOs) hung in there, finding success by landing hooks to the body. Lara was deducted a point in the seventh round for butting Hernandez, but the point deduction had little impact on the scoring, as Lara finished strong in the final two rounds. Lara won on all three judges’ scorecards, 99-90, 98-91, and 95-94. Fightnews.com scored the bout 97-92 in favor of Lara.

WBC calls Lara-Martyrosian eliminator



WBC executive secretary Mauricio Sulaiman informed Fightnews.com that the WBC has ordered free negotiations to commence for a final elimination bout between Erislandy Lara and Vanes Martyrosian to determine the mandatory challenger for current WBC super middleweight champion Mexican Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. If there is no agreemnet between the parties, a purse bid will be held on July 27 at WBC Headquarters in Mexico City. “Both boxers have claimed in the media and in public their desire for a world title shot. Now the WBC has made an official decision. Now we’re waiting for the promoters to do the fight. It`s a great fight and we think it’s not a problem to do this fight,” said Sulaiman.
