In semi-main event action, junior welterweight Amir “Young Master” Imam (14-0, 12KO) won a closely contested 8 round unanimous decision over solid 2008 Olympic Bronze Medalist from Cuba, Yordenis Ugas (15-3, 7KO). Imam and Ugas boxed evenly for most of the bout but by the final round, Imam had all the momentum going and finished strong to cement his victory. There were no knockdowns in the bout. Judges scored the bout 79-73, 78-74, and 78-74 in favor of Imam, although it seemed to be a closer fight than the official scores suggested

Boxer Ramon Luis has joined the exodus of Cuban sporting talent defecting to compete in the United States, according to a report in the Miami daily El Nuevo Herald on Monday.

The 21-year-old fighter abandoned his teammates on Friday at a pan-American championship in the Mexican city of Tijuana and made his way to Florida, it said, citing an unnamed source.

On Saturday, Cuban state television had confirmed the defection and condemned it as a "despicable act."

Luis' defection follows that of Cuban boxer Marcos Forestal, who fled his team during a World Series stop in the United States on April 12.
Ramon Luis is a top cuban middleweight.

I'm not completely into the situation regarding the AIBA pro boxing, but I guess that it's very possible to see Cuba allowing their boxers to compete there. If he was thinking of turning pro, that's probably what he had meant. He certainly wasn't talking around that he's planning to defect.
