According to Main Events’ matchmaker, Jolene Mizzone, “This is a very important fight for both fighters in a very hot division. I went through about eight different opponents for Barrera that accepted the fight then backed out. Jeff reached out to me and asked for the fight. Barrera took about five minutes to accept the fight. Here you have two guys who really want to fight each other and have something to prove. Jeff was scheduled to fight about four times in the last year or so but all of the fights fell apart. This is an opportunity for both guys to prove they belong in the light heavyweight mix.”

Barrera, 32, is coming off an impressive six-round unanimous decision victory over Larry Pryor at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, PA on April 4. This was Barrera’s first victory since signing with Main Events earlier this year. This will be the first big test of Barrera’s undefeated career. He said, “I am excited and happy that I was finally able to get an opponent for June 21. I want to continue to move my career forward and I am ready to fight.” When asked about fighting Lacy, Sullivan said, “My game plan hasn’t changed. I have seen Lacy fight before and, even though he was inactive for a while, he is still a fighter and when he gets in the ring he is going to try to win. We have a game plan put together and I am ready to fight.”

“I would like to thank Main Events for the opportunity to once again showcase Sullivan. We are confident and ready to show the world that we can compete with the top guys in the light heavyweight division. We look forward to the victory June 21,” said Barrera’s co-manager Luis Molina. His other co-manager, Egis Klimas added, “This will be his toughest fight to date but a win over Lacy would propel Sullivan to the next level in the light heavyweight division. We think he is up to that challenge

Iron Mike Productions returned to the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY for an ESPN2 televised card on International Boxing Hall of Fame weekend. Junior middleweight Yudel Jhonson came out on top of durable Mexican Norberto Gonzalez over ten workman-like rounds. On the undercard, exciting unbeaten welterweight Sammy Vasquez, Jr. blew out Jay Krupp in a three knockdown, three round romp. Opening the show, Ukrainian Olympian super middleweight Ievgeny Khytrov took out crafty Southpaw Chris Chatman in three wild rounds.

Somebody was going to get a birthday present, guaranteed! In an odd coincidence, both main event combtatants were celebrating their thirty third birthdays! Yudel Jhonson, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist from Cuba took on Norberto Gonzalez of Monterrey, Mexico for the NABA and WBC Fecardbox Jr. Middleweight belts in a scheduled ten. Southpaw Jhonson looked sharper from the get go, snapping Gonzalez’ head back with a quick combo moments into the bout. Gonzalez seemed to have difficulty penetrating Jhonson’s guard, as well as dealing with the Cuban’s quickness and calculated pressure. Suddenly in the third, Gonzalez had a brief moment of success as Jhnson’s guard allowed a couple lead rights to get through, momentarily buckling Jhonson’s legs. Jhonson brought the crowd to life in the waning seconds of the fifth with a straight left the dropped a squared up Gonzalez on the seat of his pants. Gonzalez easily beat the mandatory eight count as the bell sounded, saving him from a Jhonson follow-up. The knockdown seemed to embolden Jhonson as his output and confidence level showed improvement in the sixth. A series of Jhonson lefts near the end of the seventh seemed to have Gonzalez reeling in the neutral corner, but he found an escape route and made it out of the round. In the ninth, Jhonson followed a left to the head with a blatant low left to the cup, leaving Gonzalez crumpled in the neutral corner. Referee Charlie Fitch called time, and warned Jhons for a second time in the bout. Moments later, Gonzalez took a big left to the face and sagged to the canvas, with the forward moving Jhonson falling on top of him for good measure. Again Gonzalez beat the count and again the bell quickly sounded to end the round. Both went at it in the final stanza, with each landing flush, but hanging on to the end. The finals scores read as follows: John McKaie, Glenn Feldman and Tom Schreck tabbed it 97-91, all for the winner Yudel Jhonson, now 16-1, 9 KOs, and the NABA/WBC Fecarbox Jr. Middleweight champ. Tough luck Gonzalez falls to 20-4, 3 KOs

Mendez-Barthelemy II set for July 10 in Miami

Iron Mike Promotions (IMP) is bringing “Judgment Day” to Miami as International Boxing Federation (IBF) Junior Lightweight Champion Argenis “La Tormenta” Mendez (21-1-1, 11 KOs) defends his world title Thursday night, July 10, in a rematch of a controversial fight last January against undefeated #1 contender Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy (19-0, 12 KOs). Barthlemy knocked out Mendez with punches illegally thrown after the bell ending the second round. Mendez’ promoter, IMP, appealed the decision and the fight was ruled a “no contest” with the IBF mandating a rematch. IMP won the IBF purse bid to promote Mendez-Barthelemy II, which will air July 10 on Fox Sports 1 live from American Airlines Arena in Miami.

Hot Cuban light heavyweight prospect Sullivan Barrera (11-0, 6 KOs) will now face off against Lee “The Silverback” Campbell aka Alpha Male (7-0, 3 KOs) of Larinburg, NC in an eight-round light heavyweight battle. Campbell, who upset Roberto Acevedo by eight-round majority decision in April, replaces former world champion Jeff Lacy who was originally scheduled to take on Barrera but pulled out due to managerial complications.

About the change of opponents the undefeated Barrera said, “I just want to fight. I am grateful that Campbell stepped in so I can keep this opportunity to fight on June 21. I am ready for whoever steps in the ring against me.”

Campbell, also undefeated, replied, “I thank God for the opportunity to fight Barrera. Secondly, I want to thank Main Events for their support. I pray that all fighters exit the ring without serious injury. I am confident in my coach and team that we will give the fans a great show. I look forward to future opportunities.”

FOX Sports teams with former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson’s Iron Mike Productions for the first time on Thursday, July 10 on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes. The day before, Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Live! delivers a pair of bouts. “Our commitment to the sweet science is stronger than ever and we’re excited to deliver boxing fans back-to-back nights of fights,” said FOX Sports SVP, Programming, Research & Content Strategy Patrick Crakes.

Iron Mike Productions’ Thursday show features IBF junior lightweight champion Argenis Mendez (21-2-1, 11 KOs) making his third title defense and looks to redeem himself against cuban Rances Barthelemy (19-0, 13 KOs) in Miami’s AmericanAirlines Arena. Barthelemy KO’d Mendez in January but Mendez got the belt back a month later when the Minnesota Combat Sports Commission ruled that the knockout took place after the bell, overturning the original ruling. In the co-main event, light heavyweight fighter cuban Humberto Savigne, (12-1, 9 KOs) takes on an opponent to be named.

Former Cuban world amateur champion Sullivan Barrera (12-0, 7 KOs) had to get off the canvas to score a sixth round stoppage of previously undefeated Lee Campbell (7-1, 3 KOs). Both fighters were trading away when Barrera lost his balance and touched the canvas in the second. Barrera was warned for hitting on the break but regained his composure and seemed in control as the bout entered the sixth round. A short left uppercut backed Campbell to the ropes late in the sixth. He tried to cover, but Barrera would not let him off the hook landing about ten unanswered shots. Campbell finally collapsed to the canvas as referee Gary Rosato stepped in to call a halt to the contest giving Sullivan Barrera the TKO victory at 2:42 of the sixth round.
