Sullivan Barrera targets light heavy contenders
Unbeaten Cuban light heavyweight Sullivan Barrera (15-0, 10 KOs) is growing frustrated by his inability to land a top level opponent. The former amateur standout is willing to put his unblemished record on the line against any of the top contenders in his division. “Look, us Cuban fighters have a lot of amateur experience so we don’t need a lot of seasoning. Give me one top 20 guy and I’m ready for a title.”

Barrera says his team has tried to get him fights with other undefeated light heavyweights with no success. “We challenged Seanie Monaghan on Twitter and both he and his promoter publicly acknowledged they were willing to make the fight but then went silent. Thomas Williams is another top light heavyweight contender that we also challenged on Twitter. He said he wanted to fight but later on he said, ‘to contact Al Haymon, he handles all my business.'”

“I’m losing my patience trying to get a big fight. I know my manager and my promoter Main Events are doing their best and are keeping me busy but I want to make my move this year,” said Barrera

Light heavyweight Yuniesky Gonzalez (16-0, 12 KOs) remained undefeated as he demolished Brad Austin (10-17, 7 KOs) with a 3rd round stoppage at The Belle of Baton Rouge Casino, Baton Rouge, LA on Saturday night. Gonzalez dropped Austin three times, once in each round, before the referee finally called an end to the bout in the 3rd round. Gonzalez, a former Cuban amateur star, is promoted by Star Boxing, trained by Orlando Cuellar and managed by Michael Luzbeth.

“We are pleased to have signed Yuniesky to a long term promotional agreement,” said promoter Joe DeGuardia. “We have high hopes for him and congratulate him on his victory Saturday. We know that the major networks are interested in him and it is a hot division. He continues to impress and he is ready to take on the best that the light heavyweight division has to offer. Yuniesky has all the tools to become a world champion and we seek the best possible fight for him in the very near future.”

Cuban-born, Florida-based light heavyweight Yunieski Gonzalez (16-0, 12 KOs) is a new face on the threshold of getting national TV exposure. Already ranked in two organizations (WBC #13, IBF #15), Gonzalez is hungering to move into the top ten and into world title contention. Says his manager Mike Luzbet, “Gonzalez is a hidden gem in the light heavyweight division. He’s ready for big time fights and I tell the fans to keep their eye open for this young man.”

Gonzalez moved from Cuba in 2010. He had had a stellar amateur career as a member of the Cuban national team, racking up a record of 345-27. Despite these credentials, Gonzalez’s first year in the United States was difficult. “It took a year to find the right promoter and Yunieski was getting restless,” Says Luzbet. “Finally in 2011, we signed up with Joe DeGuardia and Star Boxing.”

Yunieski remembers those moments with humor. “I was dead broke. I bought a $300 car and if I was invited to a party, I would park it far away so nobody would see it. I spent more time fixing it than driving it.”

As for what makes Gonzalez special, veteran trainer Orlando Cuellar will tell you, “Yunieski came with all those skills of the Cuban school after a long and successful amateur career. We had to change from the amateur style and today he’s a complete boxer-puncher. He’s become a great inside fighter, able to attack and counterpunch effectively.”

And if you ask Gonzalez who he would like to fight, the 29 year-old fighter says: “I think that me and Adonis Stevenson would make a great fight. And I have no doubt that I would beat him.
