Light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera was in perfect position, the one he has worked his whole career for.

He was going to fight Artur Beterbiev in a title eliminator for the right to become the mandatory challenger for three-belt titleholder Sergey Kovalev. There was a date on Showtime set and what his promoter, Kathy Duva of Main Events, termed “a very good offer” to do the fight on Nov. 28 on the James DeGale-Lucian Bute undercard in Quebec City.

But now Barrera (16-0, 11 KOs) will sit by and watch somebody else face Beterbiev with the title shot at stake. The reason being Barrera, a Cuban defector, cannot get a visa to go to Canada for the fight, at least not in time for the purse bid.

It had been scheduled for Monday, but with Barrera's visa status unresolved, Main Events informed the IBF it could not participate in the purse bid, and it was canceled.
Beterbiev (9-0, 9 KOs), a former two-time Russian Olympian living in Montreal, instead was ordered to face the next leading available contender, Yunieski Gonzalez (16-1, 12 KOs), who has until Thursday morning to accept or pass on the spot, Gonzalez's promoter Joe DeGuardia told ESPN.com. One way or the other, Beterbiev will get an eliminator.

The 33-year-old Barrera, however, is out of luck.

“We tried to give Barrera’s lawyers a bit more time by calling for the purse bid, but, unfortunately, they were not able to work a miracle,” Duva told ESPN.com. “So, once I became convinced that [Beterbiev promoter] GYM’s show is firmly in place for Nov. 28, we decided to call off the purse bid as Sullivan would not be able to travel out of the country just yet.

“Based upon GYM’s initial offer to Sullivan it was clear that they were ready to bid over $400,000 for the fight because we were on the short end of a 75-25 split. Nobody could compete with that. It would have made no sense for HBO to invest in this particular bout. And Showtime was already backing GYM. So, I am talking to HBO about finding another opportunity for Sullivan in the near future. Hopefully, we will be able to work something out with them.
According to Duva, Barrera’s lawyer said his status would be resolved within six months, but that doesn’t help him for a fight in November.

“[GYM CEO] Yvon Michel made a very good offer to put the eliminator in Canada,” Duva said. “I explained to him that Sullivan may not be able to get into Canada by November and asked him to either ask the IBF to give us more time to stage the fight once Barrera gets his U.S. passport, or see if they could put the fight in the U.S. After all, Beterbiev's last fight was in the U.S.

“Unfortunately, Yvon refused and said that if I didn't agree to withdraw Sullivan from the eliminator that he would call for a purse bid. And he did.”

Barrera was bitterly disappointed he couldn't get a visa in time to go to Canada, but accepted the situation.

“I understand,” Barrera said. “I’m ready and willing but [it’s] out of my control now.”

When Sullivan Barrera (16-0, 11 KOs) was forced to pass on a light heavyweight title eliminator against Artur Beterbiev (9-0, 9 KOs) on Nov. 28 in Quebec City (Showtime) because of visa issues, the IBF gave Yuniesky Gonzalez (16-1, 12 KOs) the opportunity to participate.

But Star Boxing’s Joe DeGuardia, Gonzalez’s promoter, told ESPN.com Thursday they passed because DeGuardia has another fight in the works for Gonzalez, who made a lot of fans as a result of a memorable slugfest and debatable decision loss to former world champion Jean Pascal in July. DeGuardia declined to say what the other fight was.

“In the case of [Yunieski] Gonzalez, he’s just not interested, said Yvon Michel, the promoter of Beterbiev to RDS.ca. “He believes he does not need to go through Beterbiev to get a world title fight. As for Barrera, we were ready to fight the battle in the United States with a similar offer, but Kathy Duva (president of Main Events) told us she could not offer the same conditions, since it does not have an interested television network.”

    Lara opponent named: Jan Zaveck
WBA “regular” super welterweight champion Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara (21-2-2, 12 KOs) will defend his title against former world champion Jan Zaveck (35-3, 19 KOs) on ESPN November 25 from Hialeah Park Racing and Casino in Miami. “I’m very excited to be defending my title in my hometown of Miami,” said Lara. “Getting in the ring with a former world champion and an experienced fighter like Jan Zaveck is something I’m very much looking forward to. On November 25 I will put on a show for all my fans and especially all my Cuban fans watching on ESPN.”
