Looks like WBA “interim” heavyweight champion Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz (23-0, 20 KOs) will defend his world title against Bryant “By-By” Jennings (19-1, 10 KOs) on December 19 at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, NY. Ortiz will be making the first defense of his WBA world championship belt just two months after winning it via three round KO against overmatched Matias Ariel Vidondo last Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. Jennings’ last fight was a decision loss to Wladimir Klitschko, who holds the IBF and WBO titles, plus the “super” version of the WBA world championship. HBO will televise.

I'm told Ortiz-Jennings is agreed to and being finalized for the Dec. 19 HBO #Boxing After Dark main event. Excellent fight.
I really like Dec. 19 @HBOboxing card: Ortiz-Jennings is old school #Boxing After Dark & Walters-Sosa will be a fun fight between punchers

With Galarza-Hurd moving off the Spike TV telecast, that card -- headlined by a 10-round light heavyweight bout between Edwin Rodriguez (27-1, 18 KOs) and Michael Seals (19-0,14 KOs) -- will now open with Thomas Williams Jr. (18-1, 12 KOs) against Humberto Savigne (12-2, 9 KOs), also a scheduled 10-round light heavyweight match on november 13.

Russia's Denis Shafikov (36-1-1, 19 KOs) and Miami-based Cuban defector Rances Barthelemy (23-0, 13 KOs), a former junior lightweight titleholder, were scheduled to meet for a vacant lightweight world title on the Dec. 5 undercard. However, Carl Moretti, vice president of Top Rank, which promotes Shafikov, told ESPN.com on Wednesday, that Barthelemy promoter Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing, with whom he made the deal, was going to move the bout to a Premier Boxing Champions card. Moretti said the fight will take place before the end of the year.

Gonzalez, 30, a Cuban defector fighting out of Miami, made a splash in July when he took former light heavyweight world champion Jean Pascal, the best opponent of his career by far, in his HBO debut. Although Gonzalez lost a close decision -- 96-94 on all three scorecards -- he gave Pascal hell in a barn burner that many thought Gonzalez clearly won.

Shabranskyy, 28, from Ukraine and living in Los Angeles, has won five fights in a row by knockout -- although he was knocked down twice in his last fight -- while stepping up in competition.

"Gonzalez and Pascal was a great fight and we saw what Gonzalez could do, so we know we're throwing Shabranskyy into the fire. But the winner will be knocking on the door to fight the best light heavyweights," De La Hoya said. "We promote Shabranskyy and, of course, I'm rooting for my guy, but this is a 50-50 fight."

WBA super bantamweight “super” champion Guillermo Rigondeaux was stripped of the WBO title earlier this week and lost the WBA belt today (although he remains champion in recess). The reason for both moves was inactivity. However, Rigo does apparently have a fight lined up against TBA on December 4th in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada,

    • The vacant lightweight title bout between Russia's Denis Shafikov (36-1-1, 19 KOs) and Miami-based Cuban defector Rances Barthelemy (23-0, 13 KOs), a former junior lightweight titleholder, has been rescheduled and the plan now is for it to take place on Spike TV's Premier Boxing Champions card on Dec.18 at The Palms in Las Vegas, according to Carl Moretti, vice president of Top Rank, which promotes Shafikov. The fight was initially scheduled to take place Dec. 5 on the Daniel Jacobs-Peter Quillin undercard at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. However, Moretti, who made the deal with Barthelemy promoter Leon Margules, said Margules told him Thursday the fight would be on Dec. 18 instead.
