Undefeated IBF lightweight world champion Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy (25-0, 13 KOs) retained his title with a twelve round split decision over former world champion Mickey “The Spirit” Bey (22-2-1, 10 KOs) on Friday night in the Hard Rock Live Arena at the Seminole Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Bey was fortunate to be credited with a knockdown by referee Sam Burgos in round two when Barthelemy went to the canvas after a head clash. Otherwise Barthelemy was in command. Scores were 117-110, 116-111 for Barthelemy, and somehow 117-110 for Bey.

Former world champions Richar Abril and Yuri Foreman were victorious in separate bouts on Friday night as Broadway Boxing returned to the Resorts World Casino in Queens, NY.

Abril (20-3-1, 8 KOs) scored a ten round unanimous decision over Jerry Belmontes (21-9, 6 KOs) in a junior welterweight showdown. Abril was credited with a knockdown in round one and went on to win a competitive fight by scores of 96-93, 96-93, 95-94. It was Abril’s first fight since he was stricken with dengue fever while training in Cuba to defend his WBA lightweight title against Derry Matthews in early 2015 and was forced to vacate his title

Barthelemy has vacated his IBF belt. What's up with that? Presumably he's leaving the wasteland that is 135.

World class boxing returns to Longmont, Colorado, as unbeaten Cuban jr middleweight sensation Inocente Fiz (19-0, 13 KOs) returns to the ring on Saturday at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Boulder, Colorado. Fiz was an outstanding amateur who boasted a reported 381-17 record including becoming a 3-time Gold Medalist at the Cuban National Championships. Even more impressive were the big amateur wins over former IBF super lightweight champion Juan Urango, former IBF welterweight title challenger Kevin Bizier, and undefeated Puerto Rican Jonathan Gonzalez. Fiz will make his Colorado debut against rugged New Mexico southpaw Arturo Crespin (13-6-1, 4 KOs) on a card promoted by MGM and Ghost Town Promotions.

Wasn't impressed with Gonzalez when he fought Pascal. I thought he deserved the nod though. He's solid, a top 10 guy, but nothing special.

Should show us what Rigs has left. He didn't look sharp at all in that short notice fight, last time out.

Interim WBA heavyweight champion Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz (25-0, 22 KOs) will be defending his title against challenger Alexander Ustinov (33-1, 24 KOs) in the co-feature bout on the Liam Smith vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez card in two months from now on September 17.

The Ortiz-Ustinov fight is still being put together by Golden Boy Promotions, but it’s looking very good like the two giant heavyweights will be on the card. It’s important for Golden Boy to have a solid co-feature bout because the fight card will be televised on HBO payGolden Boy is already facing an uphill climb with them signing little known WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith as Canelo’s opponent in the main event. It doesn’t matter that Smith, 27, is a world champion at 154. The fact of the matter is the boxing fans in the U.S, I’m talking about the casual, don’t know who Smith is. Golden Boy might as well have picked anyone in the world for Canelo to fight and it would be the same thing.

Trying to attract fans to see Canelo fight an unknown is going to be hard. That’s why it’s important for Golden Boy to get heavyweight Luis Ortiz for the undercard, because the former Cuban amateur star has quickly built up a nice fan base in the U.S in the short amount of time he’s had his fights televised on HBO.

Ortiz, 37, looked great in his last fight in stopping the sixth round last March. Ortiz knocked the 6’5” Thompson down three times in the fight in dropping him in the 1st, 3rd and 6th. The fight was stopped after Thompson was dropped in the sixth.-per-view on 9/17.
