It's a lot easier to go pro as a boxer than to go pro as a baseball player. If you're a baseball player, you need to leave the country, establish residency somewhere outside the U.S., wait to become eligible to be signed, get signed, get a visa, then get sent over to the U.S. to play, and then you're probably stuck in the minor leagues making no money for years. If you're a boxer, you just need to grab a promoter, and chances are if you're able to defect, it's because a promoter already arranged for it.

That said, there have been a number of prominent Cuban defections recently, such as Aroldis Chapman, Juan Serrano, Jose Julio Ruiz and Leslie Anderson.

Is it possible that it's the same Jorge "El Guajiro" Gutiérrez??????? Gutiérrez was 71 kgs when he won Sydney 2000. I can't believe it's the same person.

He was a fine fine boxer.

Thanks for the vids! Barrera looks tall, strong and very technical! Well, if he is just 28 then he still has plenty of time to grab a World Title. I would like for him to campaign at 175lbs and not 185lbs, the cruiserweights don't get any respect!

He is a solid contender, definitely can go very far! :good

I really don't know if he is a Gold Medalist but I heard that he was a " great Cuban amateur ", whenever you hear that phrase it means that most likely he was a World Champion of some sort and most likely National Champion as well with well over 300+ amateur bouts. He is very strong, tall and powerful. Has all the tools to be a future World Champion...

My Boricua brothers must not like him very much, his first two KO victims were PuertoRiqueños... :scaredas:

That's not that old. He can still give us at least a good 6-7 years of high performance inside the ring, plus all the Cubans have " a great physique " and are incredible athletes as well, that helps them a lot... :good

Disculpa mi hermano, of course I read it sorry for the late reply. I was trying to think who was the Gutierrez that you were talking about and now it's when I just realized who he is. Yep, that's the same ( white boxer ) called el guajiro who beat " Ariel Hernandez " in his older years. That has to be him because he fits the age 34 range with the same first and last name and also is approximately from the same weight range... :good

I never saw him in the amateurs but heard that he was a " phenom " and it takes just that in order to beat even an " older version " of Ariel Hernandez Azcuy !!!
