With the 2008 Olympics over, and the 2009 World Amatuer Boxing Championship about to begin, I pondered what the heavyweight division might look like by 2012. Gentleman, if you think the division is bad now, you ain't seen nothing yet. I glanced over the heavy and super heavyweight division in the Olympics and upcoming world Amateur championships. If you haven't seen the World Amateur Boxing Championships, the action tends to be better than the Olympics. There is only one legitimate A+ prospect of the bunch. Italy's Roberto Cammarelle is very impressive! Unfortunately the gold medal winer in the Olympics 2008 Olympics at super heavyweight has no intension of turning professional. Russia's Timurziev, a big puncher seems to be finished with injury and illness. Russia's other top heavy in Romanchuck was ruined by a gun shot. Our top amateur talent is either staying put, or has been taken out by non-boxing related injuries. The rest of the lot doesn't have anyone as good as Povetkin's, or Chagaev's. I've never seen the Russian and Cuban field such weak heavies and super heavies as they are for the 2009 tournament. By 2012, this divison looks to be weaker, not stronger.
Some of these cats get very very good sponsorships and deals from their country, they don't need to bother with the pros and isn't Camarelle quite old? I remember I was talking with Nikolai (Kolya) on MSN when he was winning the gold medal, when he was in his cool clothes and all and trousers, rather than tracksuit like the others, and saying he would be hitting some fine Italian ***** that night!
