i think he's been on the floor once, and stopped once, in his 11th fight against the highly experienced carl thompson, after he had punched himself out in the first four rounds. that loss was the best thing that could have happened to him. he admitted he was cocky and thought he could take thompson out easily and has learnt not to take opponents so lightly. i highly doubt he'll ever be top dog at heavy, but he's young, fast, very powerful, exciting, really nice bloke who is at total ease with the media, and will have many exciting fights over the coming years.
Well, brickhaus, you made a good point! By the way I looked up Chagaev's age.He is only 28 years old.I thought that he was older. Anyway! When speaking about the future of a weight division the young fellas always come to my mind first.Young guys who are 20,21,22,or 23 years old. Sounds somehow wrong to me to call a fighter who is his 30's the future of a weight division! As for Boytsov I have no clue why he hasnt been more active this year.I read somewhere that he suffered from a back injury, but I am not really sure whether that piece of info was true or not. Boytsov hasnt been that convincing in his last outings to a ring.Well,he did win his fight fair and square, but he wasnt as dominating and spectacular as he had been in the very early stage of his career.I for sure dont intend to say that he has fallen short of expectations ,but I would like to see him take better opponents.I wouldnt mind watching him fight a rematch with young Czech Ondrej Pala. Pala lost -officially -by tko due to an injury, but up to that point he made the water quite hot for young Boytsov. The young Russian shooting star needs more opponents like Pala. No big deal to knock out overmatched no-hopers and shot vets! By the way a pity that Pala doesnt have a capable and powerful western promoter. The young Czech has talent.A bit short for a heavy, but he can fight.
I dont see anything changing in the future for American Heavyweights! Americans had some medals in lower weight clasess at the World Championships , but are not showing any potential to compete with the European HW's! Today , there is a new World Amatuer HeavyWeight Champion. This content is protected This content is protected The American SHW Michael Hunter was busted up and took two standing 8 counts, against Russian, Islam Timurziev. It was an Amatuer fight with headgear, and larger gloves, but it looked like Hunter went 12 rounds. Islam is going to be a very dangerous pro fighter, he is heavy handed and strong . Islam as well as the gold medalist Camarelle from Italy should turn pro. Camarelle was lucky that he didnt have to square off against Islam who couldnt fight due to health problems. Solis! Povetkin! Boytsov ! Koeber ! Islam! Camarelle! Heavy weight could be a hell of an interesting division with Camarelle and Islam in the pro ranks!
No one likes Dimentrenko. 6'7", 25 years old, already has about 25 fights, early on did not punch his weight, but lately has been knocking down and/or stopping his opponents consistantly. Chin is question as he has been decked by lesser competion, but hell, he always gets up. About to take a slight step up against Timo Hoffman. Unlike Chambers and Chag, is a natural heavy, unlike Arreloa, has real boxing skill, unlike Solis and Peter, is not a fat ****.
Is it just me, or does that Russian fighter up above in the red shirt look too much like Golota? That said, it does seem strange for black america to no longer be dominant in the heavyweight ring. Someone even went as far as to call Peter an affirmative action titleholder. LOL ( but that's an invalid joke, cause Peter's not a titleholder. Maskaev still holds that title ) These Euro fighters have taken over, and show no signs of letting up, not only with the current crop being dominated by Euro fighters, but now with Povetkin, Dimitrenko, Virchis, etc, also knocking at the door.
Hunter is only 19,or? Boytsov loóks very small to me ! does anyone know his size? And what's going on in Cuba? New Stevenson on the Horizon?
With all these Euros so called dominating, no one even watches heavyweight fights anymore, outside of diehard fans on ESB. Most of my friends watch either UFC or lighter weight notable fighters like Mosley, Pacman, Mayweather, and Hopkins. I think the heavyweight division is all but dead, the excitement that was once there is gone now, and has been since the retirement of Vitali IMO.
there is enough going on at the bigger divisions! Seems your friends are just not real boxing fans or prefer running with gayweather:yep
Other than Holyfield, who else can command PPV? Hopkins, Mosley, Pacman, and Mayweather are all big PPV draws. I think people should just come to the realization that the heavyweight division aint what it use to be, thats just hope the lighter wieghts can keep people still interested in boxing until the second coming of Tyson.:yep
The heavyweight division sucks big time. There are no good heavyweights today that could compete with heavys from the past. No way! Is there a light at the end of the tunnel? No. Look Wlad is probably the best today but stop and think, if he's the best and yet gets clobbered by a guy like Sanders and let's a guy like Brewster (who was ranked #27 when he fought Wlad) take him out there is something wrong with this division. Sure Wlad has improved under Steward but a lot of the improvement is holding. No one attacks him. When someone does Wlad goes to the heap of the other wannabes. Sorry but the truth hurts. Heavyweights today .... a C grade is being kind. The above is no way biased because Americans are not in the mix. It does not affect my views at all. It's just the way it is.
Hunter's a bit young to be written off just yet. He has a good pedigree (his father was a pretty decent contender who snorted his career away), and he's done well despite being very young. He's on the small side, but the fact that he isn't old enough to drink yet is the 3rd or 4th best amateur in the world at SHW is relatively encouraging. Plus, it's not as if the Hunter-Islam fight wasn't close. He only lost by a handful of points IIRC.
