True. I think people need to remember Pavlik's a rising star, not some established HBO banner boy. Besides, less we forget how low the rating were for Calzaghe's last two fights.

If some fighter wants to deny a fighter a fight due to something like that, it's pricing one's self out in my eye. Plain and simple. Politics and not being 'known' enough are not good for boxing, and the more fans that excuse this type of behavior, the more fights that make sense will not come to fruition. I swear, everyone and their momma thinks they are a manager.

No doubt ..But if you were in their posistion and at the tail end of your career im sure you would do what ever you could to set yourself up after boxing ..

That's also why Pavlik should never fight Rubio in September...

A Rubio fight is nothing like a Lockett fight. Many diehards would tune in for a Rubio fight, which is actually a little dangerous for Pavlik; whereas I'm sure many passed on HBO altogether for the Lockett fight, or just tuned in for the prelim match and then switched over to SHO.

This only means that when sanctioning bodies allow title defenses against total "no hopers" like Locket, most fans won't tune in. I'm sure if Pavlike was fighting Calzaghe or even a top middleweight, the ratings would be fine.

Maybe. Maybe not. Depends on how well off I was at that point. If I was some guy who fought for peanut my whole career, and then had an opp to cash in (Baldomir for ex), then I most certainly would. If I was a draw and making bank throughout, I wouldn't cheapen my legacy w/ a big money fight that would end up costing my fans a pretty penny. But I think it depends on how one was paid in their career.

Very true. Imagine if Obama were White. He'd go nowhwere.

Younger America wants the dominant black male presence in their culture. That's what the younger generation loves about rap.

But also, Lockett was clearly a fraud and Kelly has consistently refused to introduce a verbal game to his boxing career.

He is a boring interview and will not talk aggressively about himself and his desire to crush his opponent. He's one of those "I'll do my talking in the ring, my fists will do the talking".

If White guys are gonna pull that lame **** then they don't deserve a bigger audience.

Assuming this is true, there have been way too many good fighters drawing horrible ratings of late.

    I wonder a few things:

    1) Have people left HBO due to the retirement of The Sopranos and Sex and the City? I wonder if this is just a sports problem or something larger for the network. I hope it's the latter, because otherwise they might give us less boxing.

    2) Will HBO stop handing out exclusive contracts? No one wants to see mismatches.

    3) Will HBO please stop going out of its way to battle Showtime head to head? If you have the HBO fights this weekend, surely they would do better ratings. All the fans I know preferred the Showtime card, if only to see Quintana/Williams II.

Also, Pavlik and Cotto are not marketable to a mainstream audience. Neither has the look, Cotto doesn't speak English all that well, and Pavlik doesn't have much interesting to say.

Boxing requires a shouter. That's why guys like Mayorga get great fights even after losing most of the time. I don't think race is nearly as important, aside from the fact that black fighters seem to have more charisma on the whole than white or latin fighters.

I thnk the fact that the fight was so onesided had everying to do with it. It was a total non contest and everyone knew that before it happened.

Hell no ...Cotto has more than enough proven his worth with wins in :

    Judah

    Mosley

    Malinaggi

    Torrers

And if he beats Margarito would you really question it ?

Its 1 fight away Pavlik is on his 2nd title dfense ..There is no comparison w/Cotto and Kelly none ..2 or 3 yrs ago yes now with Cotto no question ..

Maybe because people aren't entertained by sloppy ass Pavlik as much as people think that he's entertaining. Maybe people like a bit of skill and precision after all, the ratings for the Gamboa show were better and Gamboa's not even a name.

That said, I don't want Calzaghe-Roy, I'd love to see Calzaghe ice off Pavlik so that I can bask in the pain of those dumbass, bewildered yankee fans once more.:yep
