He will be missed, decent fighter with a great personality for the sport, rarely verbally outsmarted. I can’t belive froch is having a dig either, doesn’t he realise putting down a fighter that just announced thier retirement isn’t a great look. Nearly everyone has called him a tool for it, “he knew his level”. Just shows how groves got in his head, And still doesn’t suck up to froch or match room. Glad to see him getting out with class not giving these fools a second look.
George Groves achieved more than I thought he would in the ring and I will be forever grateful to him for smashing Pudding Paul Smith. Nearly all British boxing fans were delighted when he won his world title after 3 failed attempts. Thank you Saint George Groves
He was always great value in the ring (and out of it), from his war with Anderson early on right through to his loss to Smith. Hopefully he's found the closure that a lot of fighters struggle to find, and is set for life now. He seemed to have more face/heel turns than a pro wrestler, but on the whole he seemed a pretty likeable lad, who understood what he needed to do to market himself. What Froch seems to forget is that without Groves - the verbals, the knockdown and the controversial finish - there wouldn't have been anywhere near 80,000 people to watch Froch iron him out in the rematch.
Froch has made a fool of himself today on twitter and with that article. Narcissism isn’t a great attribute.
Groves was great to watch and gave the game his very best, which resulted in him participating in a number of big fights. I found him a likeable character and it was great when he finally won a World title, fully deserved for not giving up, he was unlucky against Smith too, that last punch, on the back of his head, spoiled it.
To be fair, Groves should have been world champion at first attempt in the first Froch fight had the fight not have ended prematurely due to Froch's favourite referee Howard Foster.
Talk about undoing all his good work in the ring. He had a reputation as a tough warrior who fought them all. Now he's known as a self obsessed, bitter idiot. His popularity plummets week by week. He could've been a national treasure if he kept that gob shut. Now he's just a national joke. Even the casuals know Froch is a thick!
He was my favourite boxer. He had a great jab and a big right hand. He was all heart and no chin. Enjoy your retirement sain george.
Froch is not a likeable man. Very bitter. Good to see Ward pulling him up on this -- he is a class act ! Will miss Groves and think he has timed his retirement well
Yep, saying “British boxing won’t miss groves”, thanks for speaking for the nation Carl, I’m sure we all feel as you do....
It must boil his blood for a narcissist like Froch to see the universal acclaim George is receiving. In contrast, Froch with his appalling commentary and inflated ego is now a figure of ridicule for hardcore and casuals alike. Even his greatest moment has now been used against him with '80,000 at Wembley' jokes.
Before slating Froch read what he said.. nothing bad at all. Will I miss him? Probably not. But I can't deny that Groves made a massive, positive impact on the end of my career. Between us we filled Wembley and raised the bar for the next generation, led by Anthony Joshua of course, to box there, regularly.
He didn’t just say that though, he also said boxing probably wouldn’t miss him either, which is making a huge assumption. Why even say the “will I miss him bit” anyway? He is meant to be a pundit so should have stuck to discussing groves retiring, not his personal take on his character. He should have known his quote would be immediately picked up on regarding this. Carl Had an opportunity here to praise his old foe and improve his arrogant image a bit, but instead he did a David Brent. No self awareness.
