But I'm not on board yet.

Around six or seven months ago George Groves was getting a fair amount of stick on esb, there was the nonsense with Kenny Anderson and the British title fiasco, his career had stagnated and he was about to face a Glen Johnson dragged from retirement who was clearly only back for a welcome and deserved payday. Now Groves handled Johnson easily but this was a shadow of the former Glencoffe, in fact that is probably a bit unfair on Glen's shadow. Time and again Johnson was in range during the fight but couldn't pull the trigger because he had nothing left.

At the end of the day you can only beat what's in front of you and George did well but at that time there was not many who gave Groves a chance of lasting 6 rounds with Froch, this was around the time Froch claimed he could beat Groves and Degale on the same night and plenty agreed with this assessment.

Fast forward 6 months a couple of quick wins over journeymen and a decent win over an employee of Matchroom South America, and suddenly people want to see Groves v Froch, some give him a chance, apparently its only a matter of him quickly picking up a world belt and we have a British Superfight have I missed something?

Now this is not anti Groves thread I like George and hope he does become a world champion but what have people seen the last 3 fights that was not there before? What are the improvements he has made which now make him a real contender for world honours?

IMO I can't make any judgements on how much George has improved until we see him in with a higher level of opposition and until then the idea of putting him in with the elite of the division seems like nonsense but plenty of people on here know more than me so what has changed since last year in your opinion?

  2. I agree with virtually all of that

But he will have improved because of his age and training for these keep busy fights
Booth will be constantly working with George and his sparring is normally tough,he was with Kesslers camp before the froch fight maybe that gave them the extra confidence to call out froch.also David haye said the other day that George spars his partners when he is finished with them

The only thing we haven't seen is him being tested but we know he can cope with adversity as Anderson, degale and sierra show us
I think it's too early for froch though although booth probably knows that anyway

All this talk of Groves and Froch. There are plenty fighters in the division he needs to prove himself with before that. I think the likes of Stieglitz would deal with Groves. I also have heard people mentioning Kessler. As it stands now Kessler would obviously smash Groves to bits.

Reminds me of when Carl was coming out and calling out Joe Calzaghe.

Froch should fight Groves, Groves could end up being a great name on the resume.

Problem is mate in the big scheme of things right now Groves is a nobody. Froch has just beaten a great fighter in Kessler and is amongst the sports elite. Why on earth would be go down a level and fight Groves?

Groves has a superb jab, fast and powerful. If Kessler finds Froch's jab difficult to live with, how's he going to live with Groves? I honestly think Kessler at this point in his career couldn't live with Groves speed.

The Groves fight is funny. Groves will get KOed pretty soon that is sure.
(If he fights a real opponent, not guys like Barrakat or Alcoba). Everybody can look great against these guys.

Groves has his flaws but he has good movement, hits hard, good shot selection and has an excellent trainer. He hasn't done anything in order to be considered anything more than a prospect but I firmly believe he'll win a world title at some stage if it's this year or in 2 years time. Aside from the one fight against Anderson where he got his tactics wrong but still came back to stop him he hasn't done an awful lot wrong, when he gets hit he does look disorganised though.

I pretty sure someone of Kesslers ability all be it a shot version would walk through Groves. How will Groves cope when he gets smacked on the whiskers by Kessler? Kessler would smash him to bits.

  11. People have to remember groves is young and inexperienced
The fact he is being touted for world title fights shows what potential he has
I can see him being involved in some great scraps in the future,he has proved he can bang,he can fight on the back foot(degale),deal with pressure and expectation

He had some hard fights early in and his activity recently against lower level guys is refreshing he wants to learn and must be a good liver

I think he has matured a lot both physically and mentally.

He looks much bigger and stronger than the Anderson fight for example, his power looks good, he has a great jab, and his defence, while not faultless, has improved.

He's also become much more patient, and less gungho, waits for the knockout to come rather than chasing it.

Froch probably still beats him, but he's getting there...

I like him. He's got decent movement, a snappy jab and sickening one punch power. You'd be worried about him facing someone with technique & power though with those whiskers, I still think he's falling into the habit of getting caught between different styles too. He'll win a world title though I reckon.

How bad do we think his chin is though? Aside from one the one Anderson KD and looking a bit dishevelled after a Degale combo he hasn't been exposed as glass jawed as of yet, although it is entirely possible that world class fighters/punchers could test that theory.
I definitely think Booth held him back a year after the Stieglitz fight was announced last summer, I think he thought he wasn't quite ready for it yet and probably got it right.

    Nobody has said that.

However you can see clear improvements in his boxing and he is not far away at all from deserving a shot at the top guys.

Whether he beats them is another story.
