Come May, it will be 2 years since this great warrior passed away.

Ive never been attached to a fighter except for Chico Corrales and when he passed away, I felt as if I lost a close buddy.. I felt like I knew the guy and it was really painful.

What are your memories of Chico?

Dude always fought his ass off, win or lose. Rarely had a dull moment in his fights. 1st JLC fight is the best fight i ever seen. Sucks he went out the way he did. RIP.

There's just as much bad to say about that guy as their is good. So while I praise his abilities as a fighter, I usually tend to stay away from these threads as I don't want to give glory to a man that probably doesn't fully deserve it.

    PEACE.

huge fan. i know its wrong but i took the news of his death a lot better than i took his fight with clottey, knowing i'll never have to see my fighter take a terrible beating like that again.

i would tend to agree with you about this issue. chico was a hard guy to pin down in terms of what type of guy he was. i mean, he was a first rate fighter, no doubt about that. chico brought his heart and his balls into every fight and hung them out there for the duration. he possessed a fine warrior spirit that never failed him, even at the end of his career, when he was clearly past his best.

but, personally, he was more of a man of opposing extremes. he could be the nicest guy in the world, generous, funny, really terrific seeming guy, but he could turn on you too. his domestic abuses issues, his substance abuse issues, his quick temper...they could all turn a really sweet and even guy into a difficult mess in a short time.

i give him credit, too, because toward the end of his life he seemed to have really taken some steps to be more disciplined and more in control of himself. it takes a lot of courage to admit you have problems and wrestle your demons down. chico seemed to have ironed out his relationship with his wife and pulled it back from the brink, that seemed really important for him to set a good pace for his life...but then it ended before anything could really be revealed.

chico was, among other things, someone who you could really feel like understood the struggle of life...he had all the frailties all of us have and did something extraordinary while battling with them. i am not sure i admire that, but i surely respect that.

I remember chatting to him in the hot sun outside Tocco's gym ... he always had a very friendly manner about him and a smile that was so contageous.. I remember Kenny Adams and i getting stuff set up in his dressing room at mandalay bay for his first fight with Cassamayor... Cory Spinks , Kenny and i put a set of scales , and a full length mirror in there and a chez lounge for comfort.. Diego was a one off.. i will and do miss him still.... A warrior but a lovely kid when you actually went through the layers and got to know what he was actually made of.....
