In his day John L Sullivan was considered a paragon of strength.
If perchance we were able to match the "Boston Strong Boy"
with the "Brockton Blockbuster" Rocky Marciano in a 15 round gloved bout, who survives this titanic battle ?
Warning : not for the faint hearted...

Maybe this goes 5rounds ,and the longer it goes the better Rocky's chances. John L had the speed and the power to put Marciano in jeopardy, but not the technique to keep him there imo. If he survives the intial onslaught, Marciano would start breaking Sullivan down with body shots ,after a couple of rounds of that Sullivan would be slowed to a walk,
Photos of him do not depict a six pack on his brawny frame,
    " kill the body" etc.
Marciano would eventually bludgeon the brave Sullivan to the deck and that would be that. Rex Layne revisited!

Under Queensbury rules I would say Rocky. Hard to say since nobody has ever seen Sullivan fight.
From what I have read, Sullivan was the quickest and most explosive fighter of his generation, with the added bonus of having lots of power.
As far as the scientific aspect goes...I think most fighters of that period were still finding their feet in terms of actual scientific technique. It just may be that Marciano (no Pep himself) may possess more ringcraft and science than John. But I really am just speculating. I cannot say for sure.

I would give Marciano the edge. He fought in a more competitive era against better, more professional fighters and most of them were his size or larger. Sullivan was usually the biggest guy in the ring but here he is not appreciably bigger than Rocky. Taller, but they weighed about the same.

I think this could be a damn good fight. Sullivan's power and famous rushes against Marciano's Suzie Q and legendary stamina.
For me the edge lies with Rocky.
He weathers the storm and comes on late. I cannot say whether he wins by decision or stoppage but either way for me he wins in a tough, competitive and entertaining fight.

Not sure, many would say this often, but i think that Marciano's best chance lies in his defence and skills. I think that Sullivan clearly has an advantage in every other category including size, KO Power, Speed, Stamina etc.

To be fair to Marciano, both were aspects are very underated components of his game.

Greg, remember that the great John L fought and stopped Jake Kilrain in 75 rounds under a hot sun in Miss. in 1889. And he was
drinking Whiskey between rounds to boot..I don't think a Marciano could have had as much stamina as John L...
Whatever, it would have been a titanic battle between Marciano and a "sober" John L Sullivan...

That is true Burt. I do tend to think that the Kilrain fight was fought at a much, much slower pace than what Rocky was used to though.
Kilrain also started going down more often to preserve himself as the fight wore on.

But still, it is a testament as to how tough these old-time fighters were. It's almost inhuman to drink whiskey (which dehydrates you) and have a bareknuckle fight for-how long was it? 3 hours?-in the hot sun.
    Good Lord.

It's not difficult to fight 75 rounds when your throwing 7-8 punches a round instead of 100

When in Sullivan's career did he display the kind of stamina Marciano showed in round 15 vs Charles and round 6 vs Moore?

In another thread I posted the honesty of Sullivan. He said he would have no chance vs Jeffries. He simply lacked the technique. And even in his day Sullivan lacked quality wins over accomplished heavies.

This fight would show us how durable Sullivan is.

Now if Sullivan was trained the way the fighters in the 1940's and 1950's were, this is an entirely different thread as he could punch.

Professor Art Donovan, a contemporary of Sullivan's called him a "fighter with one punch in his head". My guess is that John L. liked to rush an opponent then land a clubbing right whenever he could. He must've relied on his strength and stamina as well as his powerful right to win the day. That wouldn't be enough against Marciano however. Rocky was a 2 handed fighter with underrated defense and a hell of a chin. He would weather the early storm and slowly break down the Boston Strong Boy en route to This would not be a distance fight. late round KO.

Have you actually seen one of those fights ? well I think you are at least half right, under London Prize ring rules you were allowed to go down on one knee providing your opponent landed a punch on you so technically if a fight went 101 rounds there may have been just 101 punches thrown but of course that never did happen, why Wyatt Earp would have gunned the fighters down if that happened. But these fights had a lot of clinching and wrestling and you could throw your opponent to the ground, rarely was canvas used back then, so these fights were gruelling in a sort of MMA way. You have got it right that these fights rarely went at such a pace, there are no gloves so you have to avoid elbows, skulls, teeth or risk injury to you main weapons but of course in clinches you had to fight your way out, no referee would separate you. so in conclusion both sports need a different type of stamina, Rocky could set a furious pace over the entire 15 rounds and I think he could have gone twenty at almost the same pace and being a guy who actually had done some wrestling training he is better set to actually succeed under London Prize Ring Rules but John L would best him under those circumstances unless Rocky Lands his famed SuzieQ on Sullivan inside 30 rounds and then I doubt Sullivan could take that and besides if Rocky does start to tire he can just go down on one knee as often as he likes.
