Words fail me here...just watch that fight ending right uppercut in round 7. It just destroyed Lopez...just like that...in an instant. It not only ko'ed Ernie, but it fractured the eye socket. A truly effortless looking, lethal shot by one of the greatest boxers of all time, regardless of weight. @jowcol notice at the very end of this vid Napoles kneels down to attend to his beaten foe and cradles Lopez's head ala Floyd Patterson. Just awesome... This content is protected
Home tv? Man that must've been great...wish I had. I only read about it in Ring magazine...but that's when Ring was golden. In it's report of the fight, Napoles proudly referred to his fight ending punch as the "derecho"....wow, some derecho it was.
Can't think of a better apt nickname for a fighter!! One of my favs! Definitely a Patterson moment there. Sidebar: not sure who the announcer is but my wife is originally from Mexico City and I've gotten her interested in boxing over the years. I was watching my tape of Oliveres-Herrera a few years ago and she ran into the bedroom saying the announcer was THE guy for calling big fights in Mexico back then, sort of a Mexican Dumphy-Cosell. I'll show her this fight, see if it's the same guy. She loved Jose & Rueben when she was growing up.
I was living in Austin then, and I believe that the San Antonio Spanish TV Station carried it live from LA on the cable system for Austin - SA area. The 1973 date would have been on a Wednesday at night. Corona Beer used to sponsor a lot of boxing coverage in the South Texas area back then...you turn on your TV and all of sudden it was boxing and "Viva Mexico". 1973-02-28 : Jose Napoles 146½ lbs beat Ernie Lopez 146½ lbs by KO at 1:36 in round 7 of 15 Location: Forum, Inglewood, California, USA Referee: Dick Young "Ernie Lopez, Los Angeles, came out boxing and opened a cut over the bridge of Jose Napoles' nose in the 2nd round and another alongside his right eye in the 3rd. Still the veteran from Mexico held the upper hand. In the 7th, Napoles exploded a left hook that put half of the Lopez face to sleep and then came on with two quick uppercuts. Lopez, the challenger, first went up into the air and then flat on his back for a full two minutes - a knockout victim of the Cuban refugee in 1:36 of the 7th round." -Associated Press Post fight comments "I never saw power like that." -Howie Steindler, Lopez' manager "At no time were we concerned. The cuts were superficial. We told Jose just to pick his spots and counter because Lopez was starting to get sloppy and make mistakes." -Angelo Dundee, Napoles' cutman Purses Napoles - $75,000 Lopez - $20,000
