Sonny Liston was sure a frightening individual, his childhood was a sad one, his adulthood was filled with violence, association with the underworld, incarceration, winning the title, losing it under mysterious circumstances. Then becoming a forgotten professional, then his mysterious death which to this day is surrounded by controversy. He was a great fighter, too bad his reign was not longer.
Great quality footage ! Always felt sorry for him even if he brought on alot of it on himself.. Never seemed happy
Sonny Liston had a horrible childhood, his father was extremely abusive, Liston had marks on his back. His father was like the Energizer Bunny when it came to having children.
The exact opposite, the man's underrated, not overrated. He was a great HW. He beats the crap out of your turn of the century heroes. He'd beat someone like Tunney to a pulp, it would't even be competitive.

Liston was very crude ,slow but had good power He had some glaring flaws for one his jab was way too front foot heavy , his head was always hovering over the lead foot (compared to older era guys with heads over the rear foot) he didnt mill or set up that jab so you can see that lunge from a mile away , whats strange is you should step with the jab but he would step throw and not tie up or angle off after words a lot , (hence he ate right hand counters ) he was as easy to counter as rocky marciano ,the trick was to make him miss that jab (this isnt the only fight that shows his flaws but here is one fight This content is protected pay attention to the following moments in the fight at 1 min 23 sec ,Listons caught head over front foot at 1 min 59 sec listons jab misses weight over the front foot and boom right hand counter at 2 min 47 sec listons telegraphs that jab ,there was no milling prior just lunges misses (cuz its easy to see far away) and had to react to the counter punch(which will always be there if you jab with your weight over the front foot at 4 mins 21 sec he lands that jab (opponent also kept his head over the front foot and not off center) but liston immediately has to concern himself with the counter ,because his weight and he didnt use that lead arm to at least tie the opponent up(say what you want but jack johnson lands that jab and immediate tie up to smother a counter 4 min 35 same **** again 6 min 57 seconds and again 7 min 11 sec (his jab misses and look easy to counter ,same as rocky marciano easy to counter but rocky was harder to hit when he wasnt countered ) 753 (notice sonnys opponent has his head over the front foot too and eats a nasty jab himself) sonny is overrated!!
Most of the "skills/style" the olt timers used are not good enough, that's why nobody uses it anymore. Boxing evolved, deal with it.
His head hovering over the front foot made the jab more powerful. Nobody uses that stupid stance with the head tilted backwards anymore. It's ****ing useless
