As more and more highly decorated amateur fighters emerge on the professional scene. What do you think would have happened if Ali and Stevenson ever squared off? My uncles and father(whom are admittedly biased towards Ali and the 60's/70's/80's era fighters ), always say that they aren't even sure whom would have won. Stevenson was one of the most decorated amateur fighters of all time. Winning 3 gold Olympic championships(could have been 4 if Cuba didn't boycott the 84 Olympics), and a Val Barker. Im doing a lot more research on this great fighter. Boxing fans of that era were so passionate(and loyal). Rigondeaux took over. GGG/Kovalev are taking over. Loma will most likely take over as well. What do you think the boxing scene would have been like if the Cubans and the Soviets were professionals back then?
One of the best if not the best ever!, I'd say he would have beaten ali, becasue he was as good if not a better boxer than him but punched so much harder, he would have beat foreman and frazier aswell I think, he could have beaten everyone to be honest would love to have seen him fight lewis!
I just looked up and found that only him, Laszlo Papp and Felix Savon have won three medals. Crazy, I never even knew that there were any amateurs with more than 2 gold medals. Why do I often read it here then that Rigo and Loma are the greatest amateurs of all time?
stevenson would have won a 4th but cuba boycotted the 84 olympics its impossible to say how he would have done in the pros when all he did was fight 3 round fights against novices..... at some point when he is in his 20's and fighting 18 year olds, he pretty much a professional amateur.
Well, they have crazy amateur records. 396-1 for Loma. Rigo has like 12 losses or something, but more than 400 fights. Loma has 2 Val Barkers.
Muricans would have been in their rightful place from the beginning: playing second fiddle to the superior soviets and cubans. That's the only way they can remain on top of many sports, by monopolizing them. They still dare to call the american baseball league ¨world series¨lol.
No doubt it coulda been one of the great all-time fights - we'll never know now how Stevensons chin woulda held up in the pros though. He may have been one the greatest heavyweights in history yet was beaten twice by the same man, once by KO. Don't get me wrong - I'm a huge admirer of Stevenson - my introduction to the sport was every bit as much through the amateur Olympians as through the pros and I'm old enough to remember the Moscow Olympics (though they were my first). For my dad, who introduced me to boxing, Stevenson was absolutely (and perhaps more so) as great a boxer as Ali - but I never heard him mention Vysotsky. Furthermore I'm generally a supporter of the Ex-Amateur fighters, Cuban as much as EE - but we never will know in this case how Stevenson would have fared. If Vytsotsky could stop him, could Ali have also done so?
I guess we'll never know, but what we know for a fact was that Muhammad Ali beat proper, full grown men whereas Teofilo mostly feasted on young lads in the amateurs, fighting fewer rounds. Muhammad Ali tested himself in the professional ranks, the only one that counts when talking ATGs.
