The Great Trainers & Fighters on Jack Dempsey

Hey guys good to see one of my old ones surface again - with regards to Georges Carpentier - fact is (which is not really undestood by a lot of people these days) Carpentier really was a media darling of the day - he was in iconic sports figure, he was known by everyone as Gorgeous Georges, he was French - he that certain Jen ner ca qoi or whatever the saying is haha - he was a romantic icon too -his fame transcended just normal fight fans - his matinee idol looks brought females to his fights in large numbers - he wasn't just another boxer - and inthe ring he was renowned for his lethal lightning right hand and earned the nickname the orchid man - one sniff of that right hand would put you to sleep - not to mention his punch he also a unique skilled elegant operator in the ring - to anyone who doesn't quite understand Georges Carpentiers fame and virtuosity in the teens and the twenties - do you really think one half of first ever million dollar gate drawing 88,000 people was in anyway considered anything other than one of the truly greatest fighters and sports figures of the day?? My own grandad who would've been in his mid to late teens during the period spoke about him like royalty when I brought him up or showed him a picture of him or anything - his ears really pricked up and you could really get a sense of the admiration he had for him - his chest kind of swelled with pride - he really was just another light heavyweight - he was one of the most sensational fighters of the day

 

:goodabsolutly. with hindsight historians can knock him now but to a generation he was seen as the real deal of the day. carpentier made it to superstardom, there was huge substance there as well as box office apeal. internationaly he was as big as elvis, much bigger than greb and wills.

 

Rocky, your post is back again, and so am I. You are on target about the popularity of Carpentier in those halycon days.Georges was a "rock" star of those days, with even non boxing fans,especially the women extolling his
looks and physique ala Rudolf Valentino...Carpentier 2 165-70 lbs was the
bain of British Heavyweights, flattening Bomb. Billy Wells and Joe Beckett.
A tidbit- I posted before. Aboutthirt five years ago while in my work, I was in the home of an elderly man in Manhasset, Long Island. On his wall there were a couple of photos of him and Carpentier together. He explained to me that Carpentier's training camp for his bout with Jack Dempsey, was
close to his home, where we were, and that he was the only one who was
allowed in the training camp, thus the pictures on the wall.
I later read up on the Carpentier/Dempsey fight and Carpentier indeed trained in secrecy, for whatever their reasoning..The training camp was later demolished the old man explained...Great Post, Rocky. But no matter
what the old writers, boxers, and trainers, who saw Dempsey at his unfilmed prime, and the fighters after him, who called him the greatest
as old Sam Langford proclaimed, the naysayers ninety years later will deny.

I think Carpentier training in secrecy was largely at Tex Rickard's bequest.
He was trying to hide how small Carpentier was from the press at large.

People who don't think Greb's lack of size and lack of punch would've been a promotional problem when trying sell it to the masses are deluded and working with a lot of hindsight and knowledge that the average fan, or even writer, at that time, didn't have as much access to or an immediate grasp of.

Greb was a high risk fight, but most of the public and writers wouldn't have been convinced he was as much of a threat as a Firpo or a Willard.
