We've been through this Burt, in this thread no less.

I've read widely on and about Greb too.

Greb expressed the opinion that he wouldn't beat Demspey only in 1925 in my experience.

As i've already explained, I'm not questioning your veracity, i'm just stating, it's a very very shaky lead, and I personally don't lend it much credence.

Additionally, even if it were true, it would only mean that Greb was a qualified challenger desperate to take this beating.

Know what you're trying to get across - but again this actually carries no water - it was not Dempsey's best win - Dempsey's last best win was the Willard fight - that's where Dempsey's prime ended really - Dempsey was trying to grind down a good boxer puncher who didn't respect reputations against Sharkey - he didn't have his speed, he was rusty (and probably a little bummed out after losing the title to Tunney), he didn't have his timing right, he didn't have his amazing mobility, he didn't have his youth or vitality, all he really had was his ruggedness and power - luckily he made it count and as ever took advantage of a situation when Sharkey was wingeing not fighting for a split second and - i beleive Sharkey could have gotten up no problem personally but I think he was trying to get Dempsey DQ'd (whether this was because he was starting to not like the punishment he was starting to get to the body is a question only Sharkey could answer - but it was far from Dempsey's best:-(

Surely you have to dismiss this fight from consideration?

Willard claimed that Demspey clutched a bolt, and actually produced physical evidence during an interview with the late Harry Carpenter.

There is testimonial from with in Dempsey's own camp concerning doctored gloves.

You've dismissed Ali's first win over Liston based upon heresay.

There is far more evidence of a fix in Dempsey-Willard. But you are counting it?

I didn't dismiss the Liston Clay/Ali fights on heresay - exactly the opposite - I dismissed them based on exactly what I saw when I watched it - PS I have a documentary where Harry talks about his visit with Willard to Tyson and Harry actually says to Tyson that it sounded like the murmurings of a bitter old man to be honest (he basically didn't beleive for a second himself) - Tyson himself said that in his opinion - with his experience as a fighter - that the whole thing about bolts and/or plaster of paris etc etc is just preposterous - he said if you held anything like that in your hand you probably break your own hands and also the plaster of paris thing has been disproved again and again - most notably with tests carried out by Cleveland Williams in the 60's - basically Dempsey was throwing punches like few have ever thrown punches in a boxing ring before or since - it was the most brutal savagery I have ever seen in any title fight by far - no one comes close in ferocity - I lent the DVD of the fight to a couple of work friends who are big fight fans but not really historians as such and when they came back to me after viewing it they both said the same thing.....they'd never seen anything like it....no one would be able to beat that guy in history....how could anyone take that kind of savagery....that is by far the most brutal fight I've ever seen etc etc they were telling other people at work...seriously you wouldn't beleive it etc etc

Yeah. But Dempsey could have had something in his glove a la Margarito. I have that documentary too, it is also on YouTube. I don't recall Tyson saying that a fighter holding a bolt would break his hand, at all.

Regardless, there is more physical evidence of a fix here than in Liston-Clay.

You have yet to even produce evidence of a fix in that fight that COULD be disproved.

Well, I cannot speak for Burt, but it was only one fight, Dempsey still looked washed-up, and he did do better in the rematch. So you're right, the extra activity made him better. But it didn't reverse him being over-the-hill and ruined by the layoffs.

Yeah, but it wasn't actually his best win.

Liston punked out very tamely, outright quit after 6 rounds, was even on the scoring, surrendered with a cut and a sore shoulder, hadn't been knocked down, had only really been stunned once in the entire fight (at the combo that opened his cut, in the 3rd) and nowhere seemingly near the brink of being knocked out.
His quit job was pretty bad.

Reagrdless of anything else, the personalities involved, and the historical magnitude, and the odds against such an "upset" ...... I always view such shocking quit jobs with suspicion.

To me that's stronger evidence than Willard having a bit of metal in his kitchen drawer.

Who do you think Dempsey beat who was better than Sharkey?

I think a lot of that is true, and i've also viewed Liston-Clay with suspicion.

My point is that if a poster wants to say "ANY FIGHT THAT EVEN STINKS OF DODGYNESS SHOULDN'T BE CONSIDERED" can't dismiss testimonies that Dempsey wore doctored gloves and that he was armed in exactly the same breath.

Great post except (to me) the ending .. the Sharkey fight and the Tunney fights to me proved how great Dempsey might have been .. if you carefully watch the films slowed down you see how close Dempsey actually was time and again to taking Tunney's head off more than once .. he was not the befuddled Liston lost following Ali .. Dempsey was oh so sloce time and again ... in addition, he had the toughness and heart to take exceptional punishment and keep coming ... he basically was out gutting and out lasting a prime Sharkey befoe the KO .. we all know what happened in Chicago ..

watch the film of the Ali-Liston II Phantom Punch fight here: watch particularly at the 4:01 mark  that was ridiculous I've never seen such bad acting Liston gets up to an arm and then you can almost feel the puff of wind that blows him back over and then all the ridiculous jumping up and down from Ali just makes it look even more staged - anyone who tells me Liston wasn't faking is either deluded, stupid, lying or all three - that looks more and more like a bad comedy show the more times I watch it  - look also on the slow mo - when Liston is up and Jersey Joe dissappears - Ali 'goes after' Sonny but he is clearly missing all of his punches on purpose - the whole thing is a joke

Now watch the Willard-Dempsey 1st round - do you sense a difference in the feel of the reality of this in comparison with the acting job of the Ali-Liston sham?? And do you get a sense that Jack was holding something in his fist and hitting Jess with it or do you just see Dempsey throw vicious horrible punches which are just smashing Willard all over the place??? In particular the wild overhand right that Dempsey smashes Jess with at the 5:29 mark - that is one of the most brutal shots I've ever seen I think

Well??....Just for the moment.... I'm asking you (and everyone else with two working eyes)....about the first fight??? Come on McGrain have some balls - it's OK to admit it - you know the 2nd fight was a total joke just like everyone else who's ever seen it - now you tell me how that fight can be used as some kind of argument as to why Ali was so great???
