    Rewatched this film yesterday,for the first time in years. For those that are unaware,it's based on the life of Jack Johnson. James Earl Jones was brilliant in this. Great film. What do you all think of it ?

    i know mushy callahan trained jones for his role.it was a good film, better than all the rocky bollox

    I thought J.E. Jones was great in the film role.......... Yaphet Cotto did the role on the Broadway stage earlier in the 60s.... BUT! Overall, the film script had some holes in it and the fight scenes could've been much better... But I do like the film as well, and I have it on tape.......

    Good film. In some ways like, in some ways unlike, the life of Johnson (and Duryea and Cameron) -- which is OK.

    Would love to see a film with Etta Duryea as the principal protagonist.

    It was a good film, and Jones was perfect for the role


    They really need to make a new version of the movie though.



    I always said they need to make a nicely budgeted and created films for the following people:
    Jack Johnson
    Jack Dempsey
    Joe Louis
    Rocky Marciano

    and a proper Ali film.

    James Earl Jones won the Tony Award in '67 for the role in the Broadway stage version.I didn't know Yaphet Cotto played the stage role too.:good

    I knew that James Earl was reprising his role in the play,but I never realised that yaphet Cotto had the role before him. Both fine actors.

    See what you mean. I'd like to see an Ali film where the main focus is on his relationship with Joe Frazier. It could take in the years when they got to know each other,and show how things changed between them through their three fights. Who do you think would be best placed to play Muhammad and Joe ? Can't think of anyone well known. Maybe a couple of up and coming guys ?

    Not sure. I thought Will Smith wasn't bad, it's just that we all know in the back of our minds that he is no Ali lol.

    And I just want to see an Ali film about his entire life. Every movie about him ends with his fight with Foreman. Why not show his 3rd championship, his demise, and all the great things he did AFTER his career?

    Im sure they will do that some day.

    I haven't seen but i'll try and get hold of it. I'm just reading Papa Jack, engrossed. I'm sure they could make a great film on Johnson's life and the times he lived in. The racism/ignorance that he put up with was shocking but he smiled through it, what a character.
