the greater fighter, and higher on the ATG list Wilfredo Gomez or Joe Calzaghe?

What I don't get is all these Classic old-timer nuthuggers gonna try and tell me Gomez who lost three times by knockout like boxrec says that he's better than somebody that never lost like Joe C. Who the heck are they trying to kid? :patsch Gomez beat a bunch of guys with records like 0-2-1 AFTER he became a world champion! Joe C. never did some **** like dat!

Lol, Gomez is more pleasing to watch even in defeat. Sanchez-Gomez kicks the crap outta anything I've seen from Calzaghe. Zarate was 52-0 and we saw what Gomez did to him:deal. It should be a crime to really compare Calzaghe to the great Gomez. I still say Gomez is better and not just because I'm a fan of him. Gomez was so smooth and had great footwork.

...Do you honestly believe Gomez would've beaten Manfredo Junior? ...I mean, honestly?

 or he could do Baldomir-Hagler and to try to pass this off as a legitimate match-up he'll say "I'll tell you why because on boxrec they both fought at 160!"

Someone of his calibre? It would be hard but I think Gomez gets the SD. The Calzaghe-Manfredo stoppage was VERY brutal I almost threw up watching how bloody Manfredo was. The ref definitely should've stopped it sooner.

I like Joe Calzaghe and I think he is horribly underrated by most posters here, but Wilfredo Gomez is by far the greater.

Dangerous to whom? Mexican cab drivers?

Certainly not Gomez who demolished him with ease. Gomez himself wasn't on the level of boxers like Sanchez and Nelson.

Lol, I said that to rile up the sarcastic folks on here. All jokes aside, Zarate was still a threat despite Gomez' dominance(which happens to be one of his best wins/performances). I do agree that Gomez wasn't on Sanchez' level but he gave him a great fight. Nelson was great too and showed it versus Gomez. You can't deny that Gomez was great regardless where he stands when compared to Sanchez or Nelson.

I don't know what to think of Gomez' run as a featherweight... With how dominant he was at junior feather, it's hard to understand why he flopped like he did when he moved up... I read that despite moving up in weight to fight Sanchez, he had trouble making the weight...

We're talking about (almost undeniably) the greatest fighter at the 122lb limit in history...

A record 17 title defenses, 17 by knockout. That doesn't just happen. He was a marvel.

How he could be so ordinary, or at least not give a better account of himself 4lbs north is something I'm ignorant of.

Horrible, horrible thread. Anyone even considering saying Calzaghe should be taken outside and beaten with a stick until they plead for mercy.

Well, Gomez was really more of a fat lazy bantamweight than a big 122 fighter like a Morales anyway.A natural Fly jumping up to Bantam or a Bantam going up to feather are some of the toughest of original 8 weightclass jumps. Then you consider the quality of opposition, a solid enough but not imo too strong chin and his by then well known love of partying and you have a recipe for a letdown and career shortening beating against a bigger, more dedicated, tougher and also great fighter.

I think in retrospect Gomez would be remembered better had he led a more spartan lifestyle and kept his weight at 118.Opposition was tougher there though.Gomez is the mostovoi of fighters, a genius who didn't like the hard work imo.
