The greatest or best fighter that ever lived should be the fighter that can beat any other fighter that ever boxed. Obviously that means it's going to be a heavyweight so the only question is who is the greatest h2h heavyweight ever?
Well is one of them But I consider Harry Greb Bob Fitzsimmons Henry Armstrong Roberto Duran Manny Pacquiao And area others equal in light of their career accomplishments against very good and great fighters in multiple weight classes
At hwt it's Ali by a mile. Speed and boxing ability of an ATG boxer with the toughness and chin of an ATG slugger. An insane combination of atttibutes.
I love Duran but I don't think he is above Robinson. I do have him in my top 5 P4P. It`s splitting hairs but Robinson is a tough act to beat.
Henry Armstrong's my favourite. Pound for pound isn't real anyway. You can't compare a lightweight to a heavyweight. It's diffcult enough ranking fighters in the same weight class.
Great stuff Red! Don't know how you come up with these videos. Other posters that have mentioned others are surely sincere with good arguments but...SRR was THE best. As a child, I thought he was exclusively a MW, not knowing his 15 years before! About 20 or so years ago, I started researching him. Was it Macy's in NYC that often cleared out their street windows so he could spar behind the glass? Thousands showed up just to watch him work out! An old poster, John Garfield, told his story about going to Stillman's gym in the late 40's with his dad. "How come the center ring is empty dad?". "That's reserved for Sugar Ray son." He'd show up mid-afternoon in his pink Cadillac and parked in a no parking zone. No cop (white or black) EVER gave him a ticket. Still was fighting until 1965!! At 44. That would be like a 60 yr. old by today's standards given that he fought once a month, after turning pro, for 12 or so frigging years! There simply is NO argument. Talent? Charisma? 85-0 as an amateur. 131-1-1 after the Valentine's Day massacre having dispatched LaMotta a mere three weeks later 16 pounds lighter as he was 21 days earlier in that early loss and KO's Basora (the draw) in the rematch. No argument; thanks Red for a great thread!!! And...to the poster that said a HW has to be considered the greatest because he could beat anyone else? NUTS to you moron!!!
