Rice spent 1901-1910 writing for newspapers in Nashville, Atlanta and Cleveland, where there was little or no boxing at the time. Only in late 1910 or early 1911 he moved to New York, joining NY Mail, then NY Tribune. You can guess how much he has seen of 3 fighters listed first.

Good info. Though there's some footage of them today, so he could have seen that. Though with the footage of those days it's not really the same.

I find it interesting that Greb, Langford, Fitz and Gans have all sort of remained in the upper echelon of P4P rankings throughout the eras, while Wilde seems to have fallen off. I seldom see him in a top 10 anymore and frequently dropped outside if the top 20 and in some cases no longer cracks a top 30.

I wonder why he seems to have suffered a substantially larger drop than the others.

I think it doesn't help that he hasn't been researched nearly as much, and because of that and other reasons, the records of him and his opponents are really incomplete. I rate Wilde really high, tons of wins overcoming weight difference, great power, looks great on film.

He still gets brought up when talking about the best British boxers P4P, but yeah, not so much when just the best of all time.

That would be a far greater thread topic than many we have of late.

Ohhhhh....I don’t know? I was thinking about doing one on Braddock’s under appreciated skills and another on who punches harder Tua or Byrd... but who knows this could have potential?

He could have just reviewed the youtube videos of each boxer.

Yeah, that's definitely on the to do list.

There was a thread on boxrec a while ago where someone had found loads of fights of his opponents. I'll try and dig that up.
