In an Article from The Ring (April 1971), the Ring staffers revive their memories of their greatest fight they ever saw: Nat Fleischer (Editor): Benny Leonard KO6 Ritchie Mitchell Nat Loubet (Managing Editor): Joe Louis KO13 Billy Conn Dan Daniel (Associate Editor) & Sam Taub (Contributing Editor): Jack Dempsey KO2 Angel Luis Firpo George Girsch (Assistant Managing Editor): Max Schmeling KO12 Joe Louis John Ort (Assistant Editor): Ken Buchanan W10 Donato Paduano Ted Carroll (Contributing Editor): Ray Robinson KO10 Randy Turpin Some interesting picks, what is your take on them? And if you have been to a bout, what is your Greatest fight, you ever attended?
FOTC or Hagler Hearns. The reason I've put two is it depends whether I want to see a long fight or a short fight. As for the picks in the list they're ok (I don't mean the fights are just ok/nothing special), whatever floats whomever's boat.
Well I suspect as you went to Barrera/MoralesI you would not need to be very original, it is pretty much a given it would be most people's number one, who were there that day! Jammy git!
i also thought you meant in general, not seen live. In that case the best fight i ever saw was Michael Brodie vs In Jin Chi I. First fight i ever bet on as wellatsch
I'd have loved to have been at that. I watched it live on the telly and a million times on video, rooting for Brodie (obviously) made it that much more exciting. Chi was very hard done by at the end. That's a fight that really was a robbery.
I had a friend who was in the Navy he was on leave in the US ,went to the SRR /Turpin rematch he said it was pretty average for most of the fight, the turnaround made it dramatic, but not a good choice, I should have thought, maybe you had to be there? Modern fights? The Morales/ Barrera battles,Ward /Gatti,Corrales/Marquez,Pintor/Gomez, Hagler/Hearns. Ali/ Frazier 1 & 3.Marciano/Walcott1.Dempsey/Firpo,Louis /Conn1, SRR/Lamotta 6.Saad Muhammad /Lopez,and others.
Sanchez-Nelson is probably my favourite fight. You have the skills of the established champion versus the hunger of an underdog, close rounds, workrate, outfighting, infighting, turned tables, swollen eyes and a desparate last round knockout; everything.
Two of my most memorable fights I saw live was the Robinson/Turpin rematch in 1951 at thge old Polo Grounds...Robinson cut badly ,went all out, do or die, and tkod Turpin in the 10th rd.. What a finish!!! The greatest spectacle boxing match I ever saw was March 8,1971 at MSG when I saw Joe Frazier whip Ali ...I remember walking into the lobby to purchase our tickets and seeing all the fur coats being worn. And that was on the men !Seriously. All the celebrities were there watching this epic event..I'll never forget the night and oc course the FIGHT...
I must be the odd duck here,,,Ali-Frazier 3, da thrilla in Manilla. I was way suprised though by John Ort's pick of Buchanan-Paduano. I have never seen the bout but the scribes at the time presented it as a rather pedistrian walk over by Kenny. Foreman-Lyle and Buchanan-Luguna 2 follow close behind.
after a 4year lay-off. wow frazier defo beat a peak ali just like marciano in the computer fight). some of you guys have to take a look at the facts cuz ali looked peak v bonavena (his worse performance in 7 years until the 15th) a cleveland williams ali woulda done a number on joe.
