Joe Choynski: KO'd Jack Johnson, tied Jefferies, gave Corbett all he could handle, etc, etc. They all pretty much said he hit harder than anyone they ever faced. Check out the web on this guy. He also weighed about 175 lbs.

In my book, Langford was a champ, and Wills, and all the rest of those denied by the color line.

You just have to look at it as an era without a unified champ. Why should the "negro championship" be considered any less than the white?

The top one is Sam Langford. I rate him as the best boxer who ever lived, p4p. There isn't a lot of footage though, so that's a bit fey, that shout. He has wins from WW up to HW, and over all time great fighters, too. He was ducked by many.

The other one is Charley Burley. He was probably even more avoided than Langford. Armstrong and Robinson (both locks for top 5 p4p, all time) both soundly ducked him - Burley would have battered Armstrong at WW (who instead elected to fight Fritzie Zivic who Burley had beaten twice - Zivic then bough out Burley's contract to avoid fighting him for the title) and contempory accounts are soundly split on who would have won a Burley-Robinson encounter (i favour Robinson by a tiny margin). Burley also has wins from WW to HW.

it was just one of those wild card people i never said he is the best man who never won a title.
i did say he deserves a mention not the prestigous title of "greatest fighter never to win a title"

I was always staggered when i think that Donovan Razor Ruddock faced , Dokes, Weaver, Smith, Morrison, Tyson twice, and Lennox Lewis yet never once got a world championship fight...

Yaqui Lopez, lightheavy weight from the late 70s early 80s. Came within a whisker a couple of times of winning the title. His fight with Matthew Saad Muhammad was a classic.

Also Jerry Quarry. Was basically the best fighter of his era with the exception of Fraizer, Ali and later Foreman, whom are all - all time greats. If he would have came along a decade later, when we had the slobs of the 80s passing around belts like they were mashed potatoes, he would have definetly won a belt.

There are more, maybe I'll think of them later.

Yaqui was a great contender. Fun to wathc. I always knew he would put up a good fought, but always thought he would lose in championship fights. For once, I got it right. What's he up to now?

Eddie Machen gave Sonny Liston a boxing lesson and then got screwed by the judges.

Sammy Langford claimed a world title at Middleweight (1907-11); Light Heavyweight (1911-13) and Heavyweight (1909-11, 1912-14, 1914-15, 1916-17 and 1917-18).

He was IMO the greatest fighter to never win THE World Championship though. The greatest fighter to not even win a world title would be Charley Burley IMO.
