agreed. many here believe walcott would beat ali. maybe they should listen to the man himself. great footwork is not just speed, controlling distance and changing angles, there's breaking an opponent's fighting rhythm which is most important. ali had it all in his footwork.

With respect, sir, I believe it is Joe Louis Barrow.

The legend is that he ran out of room filling in his name on his Professional Boxing License and therefore stopped at his middle name - which has stuck ever since...

Maybe i misread the threadstarters point but he does say at the end of his original post 'who is the greatest of all time'. Ive took this as meaning to include ALL fights in a heavyweight champions career and not necessarily just his title fights. And frazier1 and foreman do deserve to be mentioned insofar as stressing my point on Ali's greatness. So what if Ali lost the first frazier fight? Ali achieved more in defeat in that fight than what he could have wished for, as he gained respect from the doubters of the time. He proved without doubt he could take a punch and that he could fight, notabley when he came on strong in the last 3-4 rounds after being hurt in the 11th. Foreman does deserve to be mentioned too as Ali was a big underdog who some people thought could be killed in this fight plus it was the beginning of his second reign so i cant see your problem in these being mentioned my friend

It's still Ali in my opinion but the top 5 is pretty tight. If he fought everybody in the top five three times each (that's 12 fights people), he'd probably end up going 8-4.

    Gotta mention my top 5...

    Ali
    Holmes
    Holyfield
    Foreman
    Louis

    Guys like-

    Frazier
    Tyson
    Lewis
    Bowe
    V. Klitschko
    W. Klitschko
Norton and a few others give a prime Ali problems as well but at the end of the day Ali is still the best HW ever IMO.

Nah, you are right. When it goes after the topic all fights have to be considered. I didn´t read the first post, just the thread. I thought this would be an interesting thread with perhaps some interesting input, instead it´s just the thousand Top5/50/20 hws list" thread. :dead

McGrain well said...Conn stopped Bob Pastor, who aside from Louis no one else kod.Conn also stopped tough heavyweight Gunnar Barlund who kod giant Buddy Baer...Billy as he aged punched with more sting...He could hurt a man with voluminous punching...From the age of 22, look at the calibre of boxers Conn licked...Fred Apostoli, Solly Krieger,Melio Bettina,Gus Lesnevich, Bob Pastor, Lee Savold etc, monthly...
Conn never fought as an amateur and at 16 started his pro career..At the age of nineteen young Billy fought Fritzie Zivic..At twenty Conn went up against such fighters as Babe Risko, Vince Dundee, Oscar Rankins, Teddy Yarosz, Young Corbett 111,Solly Krieger..He learned on the job and became as good a lightheavyweight as anyone in history..Conn was great..b.b.

I have to agree that he had a couple of good KO's on his record. He also went the distance with a few that were KO'ed many times. Henry Cooper and Jay D. Turner were stopped a total of 28 times, and they went the distance with Conn, Cooper twice. This was right after the 1st Louis fight.

Your list is very close to mind. I have Dempsey, because of what people that saw him have said and Marciano, because of his undefeated record, instead of Holyfield and Tyson.
