Exactly. I highly doubt anybody would call the 3rd fight between two older, fatter guys better than the first fight, which was between two undefeated champions-- younger, trimmer, faster fighters, and which involved both a knockdown with an all-time killer left hook and Ali also in great trouble in round 11, neither of which occurred to either man in fight #3-- if the 3rd fight didn't carry the "Thrilla" nickname. I don't recall, at the time (1975), people saying #3 was better than #1 . . . or that #3 was one of the greatest heavyweight fights in history. I am glad to see that so many here don't put Ali-Frazier #3 up there AT ALL. Yet putting #1 on their lists for sure. Manila has to be the most over-rated fight in history. And when the original poster called it better than #1 in a "pure boxing" sense, I cannot see this from any perspective at all. Same with his later contention that the first fight was "borderline dominated by Frazier after the first few rounds." Unless one is such a major Ali fan that he dismisses #1 as the better fight because Frazier won. Me, I don't consider whether my guy won in answering the thread's question.
You shouldnt make those types of assumptons. Actually you have it backwards. Im a Frazier fan. Its a difference of opinion. The 3rd fight was fought at a much faster pace. Ali set the pace from the opening bell. He stood toe to toe with Joe Frazier for the entire 14 rounds. The slugged it out for 3 minutes of every round. The Thrilla also had great changes in momentum with Ali controlling early, Frazier taking it back only to have Ali snatch it back again late. The first fight was a great fight. A much bigger event but Manila was better in the ring. Ali layed on the ropes in fight 1 and didnt punch with the same committment as he did in Manila. Frazier did dominate that fight after the first 4 rounds. The knockdown was icing on the cake but if your suggesting that Joe needed it or it even changed the outcome I couldnt disagree more.
Yes alot of people put Manila at #1 thats why I started the thread. There have been alot of other great heavyweight championship fights. Ones that get overlooked. Conn/Louis being a good example.
