The Greatest Light Heavyweight: Gene Tunney or Ezzard Charles?

I believe it was Charles who said that after that fight he started trying to beat his opponents with causing as little damage as possible. I could be wrong though, perhaps that was Griffith after Paret.

Anyway, there are plenty of fighters that Charles beat that you could subsitute at Lightheavyweight for Burley. His resume is unreal.

 

Charles has the deeper overall resume, but I like Tunney to win H2H. Depends on how you want to rank them.

 

Truly a great fighter P4P. He fought about five years too long though and should have retired after losing to Marciano. I believe he had money issues or something and had to fight on.

 

I think you're right on that. It's too bad a great like Ezzard had to do that. Fighters' financial security (for the top guys, at least) is one thing that has improved dramatically as time's gone on, even if it's not perfect now.

Good post. You can not rank a fighter who drew the color line as the greatest or best in any category. That fighter can never be compared to a fighter who did NOT draw the color line.
