What a great question. I'm thinking about James J Corbett and Peter Jackson a great deal just now. Worth a mention. BUT THE CORRECT ANSWER IS!!!! Sugar Ray Robinson v Charley Burley. These are the #1 and #2 fighters in the history of the WW division in my opinion. They were direct contempories, Burley a couple of years ahead.
Joe Louis - Elmer Ray Tommy Hearns - Mike McCallum Marvin Hagler - Michael Spinks Ray Robinson - Charley Burley Roy Jones - Chris Eubank Roy Jones - Dariusz Michalzewski
Roy Jones vs Nigel Benn @ 160 or 168 Lopez vs Carbajal @ 108 SRR vs Burley @160 Hearns vs McCallum @ 154 I can think of more....
The snatcher was one of the VERY few who matched up well with Hearns..I actually pick McCallum on this one, fantastic tecnician, Iron chinned and heavy hands Funny how we talk about Hearns as great h2h fighter, McCallum was the same..Id even say hed give RJJ hell if he wasnt so past it.
I thought Burley hung around 160 most of the time? Either way, I honestly think SRR fought at MW better when he came in around the 147 limit anyways. The few fights I have seen he was at or near 150....but fighting MW's.
Burley was at MW for longer than WW yes - but not really through choice. Burley had beaten Zivic for 2/3 (and the loss was hotly disputed) when Zivic somehow leapfrogged Charley for the shot at Armstrong that brought him the title (colour i'm afraid). Zivic's people knew that they basically had no chance against the peaking Burley and in an extraordinary and perhaps unique set of circumstances, Zivic bought out Burley's contract to become his manger - and sent him on the MW tour that you speak of. But his best weight was 147. Fighters who would beat him at this weight are few and far between.
