Everybody loves a fighter will vicious punching power and often overlook the importance of footwork. A fighter with great footwork can keep their opponents off balance and netrualize their punch output and power.

If take a look at the p4p list. Most top guys and usually the number 1 guy on the p4p list, always have great footwork. Who do you think have the greatest footwork in history?

Please don't get mad at me if I miss someone bc I always manage to do so.

Pernell had awesome, and I mean awesome footwork.
Larry Holmes and Ali had great footwork for heavyweights, so did Mike Tyson offensively at least.
Willie Pep had great movement aswell, and check Guillermo Rigondeaux for the amatuers, he's never phased!

I can't compile a list of the 10 greatest movers, there's so many of them.

Mosley's footwork at LW looked stunning.

    Mike Tyson

great footwork, ALis Balance and ring movement make him one of the best,
KT in his prime always turned quickly to turn into a counter and jab, great movement
Tyson with the leverage he gets on them uppercuts make him great movement aswell

There are different kinds of great footwork, of course.

Joe Louis had some of the best footwork in the history of the division, in my view, because it was so economical. He hardly took a single step more than was absolutely neccesary. The result? Late power, power almost as consistantly great as in the first round, even if he's been taking punishment.

Roy Jones has wonderful offensive footwork, he's able to find balance and positioning for a punch, maybe most notably the lead left hook, at a moments notice. Peole want to put this down primarily to handspeed, but I don't agree - that's balance and great footwork, primarilyl, in my opinion.

Watch the footage that exsists of Sam Langford. He is an offencive machine, and he does a wonderful job of pre-cuttint the ring, keeping his relevant foot (right for an opponent moving to his left and vice versa) outside his opponents stance. It all adds up.

Robinson is near to peerless in this department in my view. FOR maybe the best example of balance and aggression born of footwork check out his sixth confrontation with MW champion LaMotta. He was lethal, retreating at speed and yet still on balance for sizziling combinations thrown at pace.

I think a recent example of great footwork, check out Hopkins-Calzaghe. Calzaghe uses footwork to keep him just barely inside the pocket, forcing Hopkins to take more steps than he wants to, and tire him out. It was masterful, but Hopkins too shows wonderful footwork, beatifully balanced of the backfoot to make aggressive surges. It gave birth to the KD.

I agree with you Tliang, footwork is a great aspect of the game, and one that is underdiscussed.

Ali first ... It was amazing to see a HW move like that ...

Close second PBF Mayweather who makes his living off of his footwork --

I think HW ALI wins it hands down... I can't even think of 10 great movers in HW. Ali enjoyed a dominating edge in terms of footwork. Middle and down gets pretty hard. a lot of guys are so quick on their feet. However i think Mayweather takes it for he holds the highest landed/least landed on percentage in history. Most of that reason is bc of his footwork. Even at weight classes with bunch of speedy boxers he was able to put guys off balance and avoid getting hit.

I voted for Roy. Because of the way that he nearly always landed in a position to throw a shot, the way that he could keep the distance and spin people off the ropes was a thing of beuty.

    Ali was also great.

There are a number of fighters that I would not disagree with having the best footwork.

I give Roy the all time feinter award. Great mover and he got amazing feints... too bad he doesn't do it anymore since Tarver and Johnson laid him out.

nah floyd mayweather got the best footwork, seriously, you never see him in trouble.. hes got perfect footwork. Roy jones footwork comes second, Ali's footwork was ok, but fighters have advanced way past him. Mayweathers footworks outstanding, roy jones had a lot of downfalls mayweather doesnt have, mayweather can fight going backwards, roy jones cant handle proper pressure..

sugar ray leonards got wikid footwork as well, but not great
