Someon who showed great footwork recently is Carlos Quintana in his encounter with Paul Williams. People like to say Williams was weight drained for the fight but the truth is Quintana used very good foot work to get inside and outside and completely negate Williams attack and cut his volume in half.

His foot work is what won him the fight.

Right on! And great insight on the Calzaghe v Hopkins fight too!

Of those named, I'd probably say SRR for the reasons already mentioned, but in terms of there being different kinds of footwork, Roberto Duran was immensely underrated in this department, particularly at lightweight. He was able to shift his weight, not just into a punch he's throwing, but also out of a punch he would receive. Perfect balance allowed him to 'roll with the punch' and counter in one movement without having take a step because of his excellent footwork generallly. Rarely after about 1974 was he caught off balance at Lightweight!

I also think that footwork tends to be something that some boxers learn on the job, like Joe Louis and to a lesser extent Floyd and something that others lose as they lose their athleticism a la Ali. But this goes back to the fact that there are different kinds of footwork. Somone like Mayweather could continue to improve his footwork until he retires. For me though, Roy Jones' major attribute was his athleticism and his footwork came through that - as a result I dont think he's as strong in that department anymore!

Nicolino Locche is often overlooked. He is certainly one of the greatest.

agree. a great footwork is not just circling around the ring with dazzling speed. it is also about a) cutting off the ring b) making your footwork compliment with your power and style

i like the way louis moves in the ring and the way he corners his man is simply amazgin.

Quintana is an EXCELLENT example. He is a beautiful textbook on how to fight effectively on the backfoot.

Actually, he was even with Cotto because of that, too. He mastered the 1-2-3 pivot. And he schooled Julio the same way.

So what do you think won Quintana the fight?
His footwork or the PW excuse with being weight drained.

    Was just gonna say Tszyu.
    What about DLH?
Freaks shouldn't be in this thread, like Ali and Roy. PBF is incredibly schooled, he gets a shout.

Easily Quintana's skills. And if anyone was weight drained, it was Quintana who was noticably more muscular than previously.

Williams had no excuses in the post fight interview. I dont ever buy later excuses.

In terms of pure aesthetics alone, Ali wins this easily. Amazing grace and speed, and even more crazy when you consider that he was a heavyweight.

In terms of economy...that's a different ballgame, of course.

I voted Roy off that list, though Pep possibly deserves it. Jose Napoles is another to throw into consideration.
