I think for many the career break turned Ali, certainly in Britain and Europe he was hugely popular by the first Frazier fight in 71.

I guess with Foreman being the monster villain (which is strange in itself, when you think about what he did with the flag waving in Mexico City), it was a clear black and white villain/babyface thing, as the promotion did not play up any shade of grey.

Interesting how the dynamic has switched round on Jeffries Johnson.

Back in 1910, Johnson was the villain.

Today Jeffries is the villain for many.

    They were wrong both times.

Ray just had anger issues, he wasn't a sociopath or anything. I'm pretty sure he didn't mean to kill his unborn children. The heat of the moment and all that. Also, his wife had 5 miscarriages, they aren't all certain to have been caused by him in the first place.

He was a bad husband, sure, but he certainly wasn't the worst of the lot. I don't think people realise how many boxers are ****in' dicks outside of the ring. They're violent people. What do you expect?

If you took a poll of the American public, at least, in any era, Jack Johnson would win and he'd win from the moment he mockingly demolished Burns. That's the wrong reason for being labelled a villain but there it is.

Johnson also had good reasons for being labelled a villain. And he was -by many African Americans. Ask Jack Blackburn (who was no saint himself). Johnson's reckless need to show his butt to the whole country had something to do with lives being lost and according to Blackburn it "set black fighters back 30 years" said Blackburn.

Was he wrong? I say, nope.

Ali was hated, but I don“t think he was a villain like Tyson post-prison......
Tyson was the greatest villain for me......

I'd have to go along with the post-prison Tyson. Aside from his biting antics and the **** charge, he was dangerous to the general public - attacking motorists on occasion. He was a loose cannon in every sense of the term.

Also, Tony Ayala deserves a shout.

That's one of the most moronic responses I've ever heard on this site. You are saying that just because he 's a boxer makes him a violent angry man and therefore tht fact that he is need of behavorial change that it discounts the fact that he beat his wife till she miscarried. We all should expect boxers and football players to act in such a manner that is not acceptable for non professional athletes to act out this way and we shoud not be surprised about it when we hear the news ? That's bull****, if that's the case , why don't we just have a federal prison boxing association?

Forgot about that one, him and Ray would've been great together.
