What do you think this was?

I know it will be viewed by some to be sacrilegious by many, but Ali-Foreman does not make my top three.

After much consideration, I think mine would be: (not in any order)

    - Roberto Duran v Sugar Ray Leonard I, 1980
    - Henry Armstrong v Barney Ross, 1938
    - Harry Greb v Gene Tunney I, 1922

I admit I haven't really given this matter as much thought as I should have as I'm sure I will have overlooked some strong contenders, but I thought I'd start the debate with my initial choices anyway.

    Thoughts/opinions?

Greatest performances? But you have picked a fight without footage? If you mean greatest wins, my three would be:

Roberto Duran WPTS Sugar Ray Leonard
    Sam Langford KO19 Harry Wills
    Ezzard Charles KO8 Archie Moore

    Greatest Performances on film:

Sugar Ray Robinson TKO13 Jake LaMotta
    Joe Frazier WPTS Muhammad Ali
Roberto Duran WPTS Sugr Ray Leonard

I should've called it 'Greatest Wins', my error.

Ali v Cleveland Williams, Ali untouchable a master class in any weight division.

Ali was brilliant, but Williams was shot. I don't even rate this as Ali's best performance.

    Frazier III
    Foreman
    Terrell

These would all be above it for me.

    ...

    I have my suspicions :D

But i'm not getting into that today. If the fight was straight up, it was an incredible performance.

The opponent is irrelivant it was Ali hitting without getting hit, floating around the ring, the Ali against Foreman and Fraizer III had his feet planted and got hit constantly. Boxing is after all supposedly hit without being hit.

If you'd have put in Foreman in Houston he would have ended up totally out classed, frustrated and beaten up. Some nights some people are unstoppable and on that night Ali was against anyone.

Of course opponent matters or the greatest performance ever would very likely be a great fighter sparking an unknown journeyman in round uno.

I can see you're a big fan. But that's a made up fact. I'm not trying to rile you, but the idea that Ali can be deemed unbeatable because he totally outclassed a man with a bullet lodged in his body is not sensible.

I'm a fan of duran but i wouldnt consider his performance against leonard in the top 3 of all time. He got leonard to fight and not box and i believe leonard would have won (like the 2nd fight) if he had boxed (not the same outcome as the 2nd tho). Plus the scores were pretty tight at the end.

I and others had this same debate yesterday. Do you think if it was as easy as that (if Leonard had boxed he would've won), then Leonard wouldn't have changed tactics during the fight and won? Duran was an unstoppable monster that night, fast and furious in his relentless pursuit of Leonard, Leonard was not in control of that fight so he couldn't change it, Duran wouldn't let him. Duran forced him to fight Duran's fight because he couldn't elude Duran to start boxing and moving, and that is to Duran's credit. In the 2nd fight, Duran was not in the same shape and did not perform anywhere near as effectively. If you give Leonard credit for the 2nd fight, you must give Duran the same (I give him more due to circumstances) credit for the 1st. It WAS one of the very best performances in history.
