Retired judge to investigate Briggs bout

ABC Grandstand Sport -July 26th 2010

A retired judge has been appointed to the investigation into match-fixing claims in the cruiserweight title fight between Danny Green and Paul Briggs in Perth last week.

Bookmakers called for a Professional Combat Sports Commission investigation after an unprecedented amount of money was placed on a first-round knockout in the lead up to the bout.

Paul Briggs went down just 29 seconds into the fight.

Commission chairman Simon Watters says retired WA Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Miller QC has agreed to assist the investigation.

"The Honourable Geoffrey Miller QC has indicated his willingness to assist us with events surrounding the Danny Green/Paul Briggs fight at Challenge Stadium," he said.

"The commission is now putting steps in place to progress that inquiry."
Mr Watters says the next step in the process is police involvement.

"We envisage the secondment of serving police officers who will assist the commission to gather all the relevant evidence to determine whether the event was a sham contest."

Briggs, Green talk up fight, amid Fenech's mismatch claims

    JAMIE PANDARAM

    July 20, 2010

PAUL BRIGGS has refuted claims he would be a punching bag for Danny Green in tomorrow night's world title fight, following the assertion from his part-time trainer Jeff Fenech that he was virtually no chance of defeating the IBO cruiserweight champion.
''I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't think I could win,'' said Briggs, before his return to the ring after retiring three years ago. ''I'm coming to give Danny nightmares.''
Green (29-3, 26KO) is approaching the bout with caution, aware that Briggs (26-3, 18KO) has the power to finish him with one clean shot despite his ring-rust.
    Advertisement: Story continues below
''That's what makes this dangerous, I've got everything to lose, he's got everything to gain,'' Green said. ''It's a massive opportunity for Briggsy, a huge opportunity for him, so if he can be victorious on Wednesday night, well, then the world's his oyster professionally and financially.
''He knows that, we know that and that's why I've just got to stay cool and keep a smile on my face and stay relaxed in order to be at my best … and I'm going to have to be at my best.
''He's a born fighter, he's been fighting since he was a kid. I don't have to sit here and try and drum this fight up, I don't care if no one watches the fight, that's cool with me.
''My job is to defend that world title belt that's been wrapped around my waist. It's gonna be one hell of a stoush and I anticipate being pretty sore a week after the fight.
''If you're aware of his power and his intensity and his ferocity, he doesn't care about who's in front of him, I've got to remain switched on and take care of Briggsy because he can end the fight with one punch, as I can, too.''
Green dismissed Fenech's criticisms that the fight would be a huge mismatch because Briggs had not been given adequate time to prepare.
''I totally disagree with what he's saying,'' Green said. ''I think he's a little bit bitter. I know why he's saying it - he's saying it, really, because he's trying to downplay the fight.
''He doesn't really have any involvement or control over the fight and because he doesn't do anything in support of boxing, I don't really think he wants to help the sport at all or see it prosper.
''Briggsy, at this weight and with the attitude of nothing to lose, he makes a very dangerous opposition … so the only reason [Fenech] would say that is to downplay the fight.
''It's an unfortunate attitude to have and to be that bitter from a sport that's jaded him that much, it's a bit of a shame really."
New Zealander Shane Cameron awaits Green if he successfully defends his crown. Cameron, who will fight on the undercard against Daniel Ammann, is dropping from heavyweight to cruiserweight to challenge Green, and said the challenge of stripping 16 kilograms to make 90kg limit was not an issue.
''I feel this is the division for me. I fought as an amateur at the Commonwealth Games at 87kg in 2002 so the body's liking this division,'' Cameron said. ''Danny's the man at the moment, he's hot property. The win over Roy Jones jnr was spectacular and certainly awesome for Australia to have a man of his calibre........
    :rofl:rofl:rofl

...and just another twist to the sordid tale:

Paul Briggs tried to lure Anthony Mundine into the ring

    Tony Sheahan - Herald Sun - July 29th 2010

But Mundine knocked him back, fearing the out-of-condition Briggs could suffer permanent injury if the pair fought.

The offer came well before Mundine's arch enemy Danny Green set up a bout with Briggs, which led to a farcical first-round knockout in Perth last week.

Nasser told Briggs: "You're going to stay in retirement.

"We'll give you money, but not to fight. If you need money just ask us."

The revelation comes as Briggs' trainer Billy Hussein and his adviser, former world champion Jeff Fenech, claimed the Green fight should never have taken place because it could have killed him.

"This is worse than what Trevor Chappell did when he threw the ball underarm down the pitch to win a cricket match," Fenech said. Briggs ignored his two confidants' advice because he was in dire financial trouble leading into the fight.

He is yet to be paid for the fight that lasted 29sec.

Briggs, however, was willing to risk long-term injury and take the bout no one thought he could win because of his money situation.

"He (Paul) is that broke he had to ask (Green) for an advance in payment," Hussein said.

Hussein denied the stoush was rigged, as betting agencies across the country refused to take any more money on the morning of the fight, for fear of a first-round knockout.

In the lead-up to the fight, Briggs sparred up to 13 fighters in preparation for the biggest fight of his career.

Fenech revealed Briggs had been knocked out by Green five 1/2 years ago in a sparring session.

Jeff has a very limited memory these days somewhat biased I would say. Danny never knocked Paul out in sparring ever. The day he refers to is the first day of sparring with Danny 2 weeks out from a fight and Paul beginning his preparation. Danny caught Paul with a great left hook and rattled him up pretty good but they continued sparring. By day 4 Paul was more than keeping pace with Danny and broke his nose even though he was wearing a nose guard Reyes headgear. Over all ther sessions the only true indication one should look at was when Paul was 10 days out from his bout and Danny was about the same. Equal in prep and both fighting fit. All I will say is that Danny Green has one hell of a chin because he copped plenty of really good shots from Paul and kept coming back. My opinion of those couple of days sparring was Briggs on points comfortable.

o.k the source is dodgy Danny Weidler but it seems Briggs wants his money but isnt being paid because they suspect new evidence of a rort.

    Interesting twist perhaps Stiffy?

...have posted the article from your link:

    BRIGGS FURY AT $200K DELAY

PAUL BRIGGS has been told there is new evidence regarding the betting and diving drama surrounding his non-fight with Danny Green. That's the reason he has been offered as to why he hasn't been paid $200,000 as promised. And now he is considering legal action to get back his money. Briggs took the fight because he lost his life savings and is fuming that he has not been paid. ''I spoke to ****** [Manolikos, Green's manager] and he told me that because of the investigation into the fight no one has been paid,'' Briggs said. ''He said something about new evidence. But in no way is that my concern. I didn't take a dive and I don't bet or have anything to do with [such things].'' Briggs also revealed that he knew he was in trouble physically before the controversial fight with Green. ''In sparring I was getting hit and it was really stinging me,'' he said.

I agree paul wasn't knocked out by would have been knocked down if not for the ropes, and yes they continued sparring however with only body shots allowed, maybe they should have had the same clause in the real fight

just remember only 30 years ago, most pubs had an SP bookie becuse there was no organised gambling in most areas of australi....or perhaps the world.

in those days, we'd have an SP booking out the back room of our pub and bets would get passed through to him...it happened all over australia, no big deal. even the coppas left us alone.

in those days a fight could be bet on...bookies would set the price. if there was a dive, well the bookie copped it, because they were unorganised.

today, state governments and corporations (that run our governments) are the bookies. you cant just take a dive. these ****s are organised, with the law, etc behind them.

the time of the old ex fighter getting a payday are going. however, mundine seems to be able to continue the tradition..........he carries them.....no ko.
