I'm not convinced Fury has retired for good.

A Joshua fight beckons, for the sake of completeness (and a shedload of cash).

Even then, win or lose, I am not sure he breaks into the 25, for mine. I'd have to look at it more closely once he's hung'em up for good, and all the results are in.

Like many, I don’t believe 100% that he’s really retiring and it would seem he has made the announcement for future promotional purposes and financial leverage.

Still, how much more can he hope to increase the hype for a fight against AJ?

It would seem that fight would still be a lock to attract plenty of interest and $$$ and it’s a fight that could get truly derailed if AJ trips and falls again during the interim.

I think perhaps the only fight that Fury wants is a rubber against Usyk - but he’s not in a position to secure that fight atm without having to fight someone(s) else to prove his eligibility - and Tyson himself might trip and fall travelling along that path.

If he had beaten Usyk or could beat Usyk in a rubber, Fury would likely deem that as proof of his superiority over AJ by one degree of separation without ever actually fighting AJ.

If he could manage it I think Fury would much prefer to get straight back to Usyk without having to fight and defeat AJ to get there.

So, if an immediate rubber vs Usyk was on offer, I think that perhaps Fury would most likely take it.

I could be way off here Pugs but wouldn't it have to be 1-1 to be a "rubber" match?

No, you are “way on” JT.

Rubber is the “deciding” 3rd match after 1-1.

It was clearly a test on my part to see who could pick up on it…and suffice to say, you passed with flying colours.

Keep an eye out for me planting similar “eggs” in the future.

Of course I don’t make errors per se but if you think you’ve found one - then it will no doubt be another “egg” that I have planted for someone to crack.:lol::lol:

Outside Top 20, and that is being extremely generous to him...

In an alternative ‘fair’ universe, Fury would have loses on his CV to McDermott, Wallin and possibly Ngannou. However he would also have got the decision over Wilder in their first fight.. So he’d be ending with a 33-5 wafer thin resume. Not an ATG but a H2H headache for most. I’m going somewhere between 15-20 at best.

Tbh, I’ve heard series rubber referred to before the fact of the start of a series that has a preset, odd number of matches - say 3 or 5 matches but most commonly rubber does refer to decider - if not a decider, then some might call the third or fifth match a dead rubber.

Have I sufficiently equivocated myself out of this?? Likely not.:lol::lol:

I watched a movie once called "No Way Out". Hang on, he did get out...there's hope for you yet! It may take some months tho.

Not very high. he undoubtedly could have been higher than the first Tyson, but like him, he wasted his potential, apart from the fact that he was not that inhumanly talented, although in H2H he must have been much higher.
I have him 15-20, so I don't have Usyk in the top 10, although he is somewhere around...
Why? his greatest success was the 39-year-old Wlad, for whom he was a style nightmare, as the fight showed. He didn't give me a rematch, which must be frustrating for me. Terrible fights with Nhannou, McDermott, Wallin where he was very close to defeat. Fights with Wilder are respectable, but Deontay is not ATG either. He deserves respect for other victories against Chisora, Cunn and Whyte, but he does not give a high place in history. A colorful character, a funny guy, but he has no outstanding achievements.. The Klitschko brothers are higher for me, Lennox Lewis is also

    Superb analysis.

I think Fury's legacy is a bit similar to GGG's, Kovalev's, or (@ this point) Bivol's in their respective weight classes - IMO, each 1 was maybe 1 big win away from taking their place among the immortals in their weight class, but they came up short of that, leaving their legacies in a bit of limbo.

The Ngannou fight was also a big black eye for the sport.
