Some people say shavers, others foreman, liston.

Who do you personally believe was the number 1 in the power department followed through to say the 5th of all time.

This is a VERY hard question to answer as all you mention could be the hardest puncher. As there is no reliable method of measurement to use amongst all, one can/could pick who they like best in the department.

I suppose a good way to guage it is through the quality of chin they KOed VS various opponents - but even then a argument would develop.

I'm all ears regarding anybody that can really prove who hit the hardest. I'll state from the onset that I don't think it really can be proven beyond a shadow of doubt.

I'll leave this with - all the guys you mention are good hitters, and leave it with that.

My personal list would look something like this, although of course there is no way of proving who hit the hardest.

    Earnie Shavers
    George Foreman
    Mike Tyson
    Lennox Lewis
    Sonny Liston

HM: Tua, Baer, W Klitschko, Louis, Marciano, Sanders, Lyle, Morrison, Ruddock, V Klitschko, Bruno

I suppose, but most people have an opinion on who was the hardest hitter and I think the overwhelming consensus is Shaver. I know liston and foreman were extremely feared hitters. Louis and baer could crack. And Tyson would be an extremely feared rapid fire combination puncher but I dont think there is any arguement that he is on that list, maybe Im wrong about that.

I just would like to hear everyones opinion on the subject. But yeah maybe the 1-5 thing was a little to much to ask for.

I wasn't being critical of the question, Ethan;) I was just mentioning that it is a difficult one to answer... for anybody!

In my OWN view, Shavers hit the hardest... but that is just my view. I'd go Foreman, Liston and Baer after that.

About the only thing I was really trying to say, Ethan, is that you and me really do lack a way to measure this with any degree of certainty... so it is really a hard question for all to answer, without their own favourites croppping up.

So your criterion is a KO regardless of opponent? We need to bring back the hypnotoad.... you looked better with the weird eyes lol

    It's impossible to say really.

I think a guy like Bonecrusher Smith probably hit HARDER than Mike Tyson. But he didn't have the skill, technique or timing, he didn't consistently land with damaging punches.

Not interested, never have been. It's about delivery, not power.

They say Shavers, but his KO ratio at the top end is nothing like what it should be. It's composite punching that interests me.

For example, in my opinion, Tyson is not a top 5 puncher in terms of pure power, probably, but in terms of composite punching he is top 2.

Here's a top 10 composite punchers for anyone who's interested:

    1 - Joe Louis
    2 - Mike Tyson
    3 - Sonny Liston
    4 - Jack Dempsey
    5 - Rocky Marciano
    6 - Lennox Lewis
    7 - George Foreman
    8 - Max Baer
    9 - Wlad Klitchko
    0 - Max Scmeling

It changes though. Top 6 are pretty solid.

I remember hearing in the mid-90's that some test or other had shown that Tommy Morrison was the hardest hitter in the world then. I don't know if it was true or not, but he really could hit, if not much else.

For less better known names, I think Frank Bruno was a big puncher, as was Herbie Hide, though as chinny sorts, didn't always have the opportunity to land the big bombs.

But the winner has to be...................AUDLEY.
