    Hi,
First post but have been a regular 'lurker' for 7 years! Love (loved?) the sport and have been an amateur boxer myself, nothing high level.

I just wanted to post about the harmful effects of the increased number of weight classes on boxing as a sport that I believe hasn't been spoken about much: less diverse styles.

It's my opinion (not proven by data but by mere observation) that leveling the playing field of weight by the amount of weight classes we currently see and have seen has reduced the diversity of styles. Boxers have less style diversity and the overall style diversity in the sport is lesser because there's much more equitable weight classes. With less weight classes there would be, IMO, more diverse styles as boxers have to deal with more varied sets of biometrics in a division (height, weight, speed, etc.).

SLW, SMW, SWW, CW & BW should all be disbanded, IMO. Also, from a commercial POV, there's just not enough boxers to fill entertainment schedules with the current number of weight classes. Further, I think this would have a good effect on weight bullying and rehydration problems!

100% - my post is probably more common sense and is probably agreed with by many in this community... Waste of a first post?! Haha

Eliminate everything below 118. If you're too small to compete at 118 then just call yourself a chick already and be done with it. Eliminate most of the super and junior divisions.

But I'd consider adding a division between 175 and 200.

Yeah, fair one, 175-200 is a big jump, even for big guys!

I don't watch below 118 lbs tbh, so fair play.

That being said, Kovalev probably fights at 190 on fight night! Beterbiev probably at 200 lbs! That's not fair for 175 lbers. 25 lbs for HWs isn't that much, relatively speaking.

Now you mention it, it cap HW at 230 lbs, seeing blobs fighting at 250+ is just un-athletic!

I disagree with eliminating everything below 118. After all, Flyweight is one of the eight original Glamour divisions.

    My division system:

    105
    112
    118
    126
    135
    147
    160
    175
    190
    205
    Heavyweight

11 divisions total. If there were 11 divisions and 22 total belts, boxing would be a lot more mainstream friendly.

In 30+ years I think a 220/225 division might be necessary, too, but at the moment BW has little purpose as Usyk has three out of four HW belts and weighs less than 225. Also, somebody at 235 can make 225, so you will have 6'7 beasts roaming the division regularly when it is eventually needed.

Didn't think of that! Love chocolotito! Wouldn't get rid of him for anything! I redact my agreement about getting rid of/not watching below 118!

Everything up to 175 makes sense. I just fail to see the logic of the 3 weights classes on the heavy end of the spectrum. Could you expand?

Nobody on Earth or in history who weighed 176-199 could compete at top HW level now, I'm sorry, but that's how it is. As far as the 190 division being added between 175 and CW, a lot of LHWs have discussed being really limited because they're too large to easily make LHW and too small to fight at 200. Similarly, guys like Mchunu can't make 175 but they're clearly too small to fight at 200.

Making CW 205 instead of 200 would just strengthen the division a little from losing the small CWs.
