Don't blame Howard for backing out, it was a definite screw job in Sean's favor.

    Thin B,,,,,,,

    I agree,,,,,,,,,most definitely,,,,,,,,,

Howard Davis Jr. saw the poor promotion in Little Rock, and that
16' x 16' schoolyard boxing ring that Pat O'Grady had set-up, to keep
Howard in a smaller square and limit his ring movement against Sean.

For Howard, he could ill afford a loss, as it would have sent him down to
bottom section of the Top 10 Lightweights.

If I remember correctly, the '3' ring ropes were extremely wide apart,
and if any boxer went back to lean on them, he would have fallen through
    and onto the ring apron.

It was,,,,,,,,an abysmal prodiction by Starmaker, Inc. Promotions,,,,,,as
only a small amount of people showed up to watch the bout. The
attendance was listed at 1200 (approximate), but in reality, maybe
1000 tops, in the 1700 seat capacity Convention Center.

Starmaker, Inc. - operated by Sean's half-brother, Michael Gass.

So some 21 year old, 295 lb punk gets drunk and decides to attack a 150 lb old man? Lovely.

I hope his sentence is going to be kicked up several notches in light of Ganigan's death. Anyone know what the legal system in Hawaii is doing about this case?

This is the 'scum-bag low-life' that attacked Andy Ganigan.

    21 year-old, Matthew K. Kupa.

    [/url]

    On March 26, 2010 - 21 year-old Matthew K. Kupa, 6' 9" 290 lbs. attacked
    57 year-old Andy Ganigan, 5' 7" 160 lbs.

On Friday Night, March 26, 2010, Andy Ganigan had visited a popular Waipahu restaraunt/bar,
called 'The Last Stop Bar' near the Highway Inn at the Waipahu Shopping Center. Later in the
evening, at 11:00 PM, Andy and a friend left the bar and headed down a side street, towards
a staircase which ledto a Pizza Hut restaraunt. There, Andy had an altercation with 21 year-old
Matthew K. Kupa, who had been drinking heavily that evening.

An argument developed, and a fight ensued in the back parking lot, where the larger Kupa
hit Andy Ganigan in the head from behind, and then battered the smaller Ganigan.

Witnesses stated, that Matthew K. Kupa, who was intoxicated at the time, repeatedly hit
Andy Ganigan in the head, even after the former boxer had fallen to the ground, where Kupa
continued to hit the smaller and defenseless Ganigan in the head again and again.

Two un-named men came to the rescue of the unconcious Ganigan, and screamed 'Stop already'
while pulling the 6' 9" 290 lb. behemoth off of the seriously injured 57 year-old.

The attack and beating left Andy Ganigan, permanently disabled.

In Criminal Court, Matthew K. Kupa pled 'No Contest' to 'First Degree Assault', stating that, 'he had been
drinking heavily that night, and could not recall the incident.'

Assistant Prosecutor, Scott Bell had sought the 'maximum penalty', a 10-Year sentence.

But, Circuit Court Judge, Glenn Kim over-ruled the decision, and gave the 21 year-old Matthew K. Kupa
only an 18-Month jail sentence, with early release for 'substance abuse treatment'. Also included, was
    a 5-Year Probation clause.

    Now,,,,,,that sounds fair,,,,,,,,,,,,,doesn't it...

Maybe next time,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,one of Judge Glenn Kim's family members will experience the same fate as Andy Ganigan.

    Thanks,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    Mister Fists,

Much appreciated,,,,,,,,,,,,hope you enjoyed the information on
Andy Ganigan,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,one of my favortite fighters.

A little known fact,,,,,,,,,CBS-TV demanded that Larry Hazzard,
New Jersey Boxing Official, was brought in to be the 'third man in the ring'
    for this bout.

CBS-TV Sports, wanted no 'funny business' with Pat O'Grady, either in the
referee or judges scoring of the bout.

Larry Hazzard was paid $2500 (plus expenses) to referee this bout,,,,,,,,,,
his typical fee was $1200 to $1500 for Title Bouts.

    The Judges at Ringside;
Lloyd Haines and James Henry, were both from Little Rock, Arkansas

    February 1982 Lightweight Division Update

    * WBC Champion, Alexis Arguello will defend his Title for the 3rd time, versus James Busceme
on February 13, 1982 in Texas. Arguello who won the WBC Title versus *Jim Watt in June 1981, has defended
his Championship two times, against Ray Mancini (KO 14 - October 1981) and Roberto Elizondo (KO 7 - November 1981).

    * If Alexis Arguello successfully defends his Title versus James Busceme, he will the defend his Title
versus #1 WBC Andy Ganigan on April 3, 1982, in Las Vegas.

    * Andy Ganigan, who defeated #2 WBC Sean O'Grady by a Knock-out (KO 2) on October 31, 1981 -
has not fought in 3-Months. The 'Hawaiian Punch' is planning a scheduled 10-Round tune-up bout for
February 20, 1982 (in Hawaii) versus 'light-hitting' veteran #28 Jerome Artis, before taking on the
    WBC Champion in April 1982.

    * Sean O'Grady, who lost a devastating Knock-out (L KO 2) to Andy Ganigan on October 31, 1981, will now
move up to the 140 lb. Light-Welterweight Division. Though O'Grady came in at 132 lbs. versus
Andy Ganigan, Sean has stated that he can no longer drain himself to make 135 lbs. O'Grady will
come back on February 9, 1982 - and plans on having 3-bouts at 140 lbs. before challenging
for the WBC Light-Welterweight Championship in the Summer of 1982. (Saoul Mamby is the current WBC Champion).

    * WBA Champion, Arturo Frias - successfully defended his Title for the 'First-time' by defeating #1 WBA
Ernesto Espana on January 30, 1982 (W Techincal Decision after 9 Rounds). The WBA had ordered an immediate
'rematch' due to the controversial circumstances in the bout - but the WBA will allow the Champion to defend his
Title against Ray Mancini first (bout scheduled for May 8, 1982), providing the winner of that bout defends the
Title versus Ernesto Espana within 90-Days.

    * Ray Mancini, the #4 WBA Lightweight, defended his NABF Title by stopping (KO 10) Julio Valdez
on January 23, 1982. His next bout will be versus the WBA Champion, Arturo Frias. The bout for the
WBA Championship will be held in Las Vegas, on May 8, 1982.

Absolutely! I watched Arguello v Ganigan on Youtube last night. I can see why he's a favourite of yours. :good

Watching the fight, I could not help but wonder how a match between Andy and the Mancini who fought Arguello would have panned out.
That would have been a humdinger, imo.

I see on Boxrec that Ganigan had only one other fight after Arguello, against Jimmy Paul.
    What gives, Pepe?
Why did Ganigan retire so soon after fighting for the title? (Where, if anything, he should have been encouraged by his performance against Arguello.)

    Mr. Fists,,,,,,,,

After the May 1982 bout with Alexis Arguello,,,,,,,,

Andy Ganigan had made some decent money in his '3'-bouts with
    Rodolfo Gonzalez (June 81' - $60,000), Sean O'Grady (October 81' - $70,000)
    and Alexis Arguello (May 82' - $130,000).

Andy went back to Hawaii, and he and his Manager, Larry Inchonise
started up a 'sugar-cane cutting business' together.

Andy was still one of the Top-rated Lightweights in both Boxing Organizations,
    #3 WBA and #3 WBC.

A bout with former WBA Champion Arturo Frias for July 1982 hit a 'contractual snag',
    so that bout was squashed.

On the WBA side, Ray Mancini and Top Rank (Bob Arum) had a commitment with
the WBA and Ernesto Espana for July 1982, and then it was a 'mandatory defense'
in November 1982 versus Deuk-Koo Kim (tragic ending). So Mancini was tied up,
and he really showed no desire to fight Andy at all.

On the WBC side, Alexis Arguello soon jumped up to 140 lbs. (Light-Welterweight)
to take on Aaron Pryor (in November 1982).
Arguello did not vacate the WBC Lightweight Title until February 1983.

Unfortunately, Andy was not part of the WBC Elimination group who fought in May 1983
(#1 Edwin Rosario vs #2 Jose Luis Ramirez).

Andy and Manager Larry Inchonise still tried to put together a bout with
Bobby Chacon for Hawaii, in September 1982 - but Chacon wanted too much money
to come to Honolulu, which would only have left Andy with only a small amount of the total fight purse.

A CBS-TV bout with Howard Davis Jr. was planned for September 1982, but one of the fighters
pulled out, due to an injury.

Andy was offered a bout with Mexican Lightweight Champion, Jose Luis Ramirez for Friday night - November 26, 1982.
It was on the undercard of the Larry Holmes -Randy 'Tex' Cobb WBC Heavyweight Championship Bout,
    set for the Houston Astrodome.
An NABF Lightweight Championship versus #2 WBC Jose Luis Ramirez, and on ABC-TV. But the fight purse
was a 'minimal offer', and Andy and Manager Larry Inchonise declined.

So Andy, more-or-less temporarily put his boxing career on ice.

Thank You Fists,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I try to be accurate, and load up the details.

#3 WBA Andy Ganigan was supposed to fight #6 WBA Arturo Frias 24-2-0 (7 KO's) on Sunday, July 18, 1982,
in Atlantic City, New Jersey,,,,,but the promoters got 14-bout professional, Texas Lightweight, and newly crowned
USBA Lightweight Champion, #16 WBA Ruben Munoz Jr. 13-1-0 (10 KO's) to fight Arturo for less money
($30,000 for Munoz compared to $65,000 for Andy Ganigan).

Ruben Munoz Jr. went on to Knock-out Arturo Frias that day, and on National Televsion.
