The division was actually worse for those periods and it was so bad at one point that a worn-out version of Muhamad Ali managed to hang on to the heavyweight championship way too long, although he did lose it to a fighter with only 8 professional fights. The best time for heavyweights in recent years was when Tyson was "Kid Dynamite" and if you bother to read any boxing periodicals from that time you will see the old cliche, "the heavyweights are in the worse shape ever" covering the pages of The Ring and KO Boxing and that Tyson was only a blown-up cruiserweight who would be exposed by the first talented big man with a good jab he fought.

I think he actually had 3 major belts at one time has not lost a fight since then, although he may have forfeited a belt due to sanctioning politics.
