A lot of people judge this crop against the heavies of the 90's. This isn't fair, as the 90's was the best decade ever for heavywieght boxing, with the ghost of the 70's, generally considered to be the golden age of heavyweight boxing, right there in recent memory.

But compared against the 10's, 20's, 30's 40's 50's 60's and 80's, this is a pretty damn good era we are in, and I think the new 2010's are going to be pretty amazing, with more cuban and former soviet prospects.

In the 80's, there was alsway one guy at the top of the mountain (Holmes, Tyson) with the fat, WBA champion De jour and a bunch of fat lazy condtenders. Today, in Klit, Sultan, Chag, and Povetkin, we have a cadre of well schooled amatuer fighters who are usually in very good shape. People are also very exited about Peter and Gomez, with VitKlit coming back, Haye joining the ranks, young guys on the rise, Lyackovich and Valuev young enough to get in there, and a top 25 that looks pretty good when you look at it objectively.

We live in an international era, when guys are coming out of nowhere all the time. There are three reasons why people say this eara stinks:

    A) There are not many Americans representing, so there is some sour grapes.

    B) Whereas these Europeans are much more talented than given credit for, the current crop fight in mostly unexciting styles

    C) We need unification- its pointless to have a cadre of top guys if they aren't going to fight each other.

Fortunately, we are going to get C with the Klit- Ibrigimov unification.

I think this is going ot be the start of another terriifc era.

    2000-2003 was ok.

2004-2005 sucked. Probably the worst years for HW history ever.

2006 was below average but things were getting better and 2007 has been ok. Things will only get better with guys like Wlad, Chagaev, Peter, Haye, Povetkin, etc.

I don't disagree with you entirely; certainly fans look at past eras with rose-colored glasses. On the other hand, your take might be a "glass-half-full" one.

    good post.
many will critisize and say that era or that fighter was better , but i have also long said there is nothing wrong with todays heavyweight scene .

another good thing is don king has been frozen out as it used to be the case you could not have a heavyweight fight without a fighter of his fighting another fighter of his or a mandatory and it used to be one long recycled merry go round.

Heightweights today are fat and lazy. If they had any ambition whatsoever they would be out playing baseball or football.

The current crop of heavyweights are a lot better than many people think, but this does not mean that the division is good.
The heavyweight division has always been full of interesting characters and exciting fighters in the years gone by, everybody in the western world knew who the champ was.
What do we get now? Competent yet bland fighters involved in boring title fights that don't even make the sports pages of the press half the time.

Sorry, but the heavyweight division sucks.

The HW division is widely dominated by one boxer, Wladimir Klitschko, whose status as a top 50 p4p is debatable. I fail to see how the HW division can be viewed as pretty good.

Now that Don King has been largely extracted like an abcessed tooth from the heavyweight title scene, you can expect to start seeing the best fighting the best, and the resulting unified heavyweight champion will mean only good things for the division, as a whole.

With ONE man to beat, and him clearing being the one that everyone is gunning for, you'll then have a stronger competition pool who all have a clear objective, instead of having four mini heavyweight divisions, as we have, now, where the competition and talent pool is dispursed out over four seperate bodies, thereby, greatly diminishing the quality in each.

The reason the division is seen as so lackluster is cause of what I just stated, not cause of any of the fighters............its in a lull cause none of the top fighters have been fighting each other.

The divsion sucks, and the boxing fans have spoken by showing little interest in televised matches. Unless Holyfield or Tyson fought there was very few PPV matches being made in the 2000s, which can possibly be considered one of the most boring decades of all time.

As far as one of the reasons Cachibatches mentioned, about the Heavyweight division lacking popularity because there is no Heavyweight title holders is a false statement IMO. Just 2 years ago all 4 title holders were american, you had Rahman WBC, Ruiz WBA, Bryd IBF, and Brewster WBO. Many boxing historians, HBO and Showtime often made fun of the division just as much as now on there telecasts.

I think fans are pissed for a few reasons, one being lack of matchups the people want to see, another is long lay offs and postponements by the current champions. I think also the lack of overall talent is in question as well, with many fighters being one demensional in there styles. I think last but not least, many of todays Heavyweights lack the personality needed to attract people to there matches.
