The heavyweight Division is acutally pretty good

The division rocks, and the boxing fans have spoken by showing huge interest in televised matches where millions and millions who never watched boxing before are tuning in

. Unless vitali and wladimir fought europeans fell asleep at the fat lazy american heavys on show in the 2000s, which can possibly be considered one of the most boring decades of all time for watching american heavyweights fight.


I think fans are happy for a few reasons, one being the chance to watch on free to air tv the boxers they want to see, another is long line of new heavys coming through and to hopefully match them with the current champions.

I think also the lack of overall talent amonst american heavys is in question as well, with many fighters being one demensional in there styles/ fat lazy and unmotivated

. I think last but not least, many of todays Heavyweights suit the markets that they fight out of and are dignified and honest in there pre fight build up and post fight interviews and having no trouble in selling out there matches.

 

The Richard Dunns and Jean Pierre Coopmans that challenged for titles in the past have been replaced by a deep and talented contingent from Europe.

The problem as I see it is that the vast majority of the fight commentators are flat out lazy and don't take the time to even research the sport that they pass judgement on. There are some exceptions but too many of them just repeat what they hear and keep on repeating it over and over.

Just last night during the Abel and Oruh fight the two commentators kept perpetuating the claim of weak division and even made utterly idiotic statements that if either of these guys showed something they might be able to get a title fight in a few fights. Well the truth is neither of these guys is even in top one hundred and there's probably 80 guys ahead of them that would clean their clock.

I think the division has more depth right now than it's had in years.

 

The division is alive & well, if you disagree than there are always the lower weights.

I'm looking forward to the long overdue unification of the Heavyweight belts.

 

Sean- In your country the Heavyweight division might be doing extremely well for all I know, but here it lacks popularity. I have already stated my reasons why, though you may disagree. From where Im from no one even talks about the Heavyweight division, its like it is dead or something. I mean everyone watches guys like Oscar, Mayweather, Hopkins, and Cotta, Pac, and Winky, but other than them no one I really know even watches anything else.

Two top amateur stars have turned pro,Povetkin and Solis.
Juniour super talent Boytsov has showcased his skills in the paid ranks for quite a while,too.
Vitaly Klitschko's comeback will cause great interest in the big boys' division again.
Anyone remembers Larry Holmes and his incredibly boring era?

 

you are one of a very few american posters who reads the european section and would know about the rise of the heavys today and heavy`s coming through.

this introverted approach by your compatriats by and large is why it takes time to get the mindset to change.


but to anyone who has watched boxing for a long time like yourself it is styles and abilty to get the job done boxing wise that counts more than what language they speak.

 

in my continent last friday and saturday they showed reid v froch to a full house

then they showed hoffman v dimetrenko and a womens fight to a full house on free to air mainstream prime time tv with millions watching and this weekend there will be another full house for erdie v mendoza and again on prime time free to air tv with millions in europe watching.

europe has many many champions and boxing is thriving.

 

Im jealous, now its UFC getting all the attention in the bars where I go. I honestly doubt the average guy could name even one of the title holders in the heavyweight division, its sad but true. I really hope it goes back to the 90s where everyone knew who the champ was, even your grandma.:yep

 

True. I think it's that Europeans are ruling the division that bothers these boneheads.

The heavy weight division is not that great. I don't see any fights in the near future that really excite me.

 

Nationalists that can't see beyond their own borders are a part of boxing that makes me want to puke. It goes against the vary nature of one of the most individualistic sports in history. But then I also have little time for fight fans that don't even bother to keep abreast of fighters beyond the household names. The huggers and idol worshippers are the worst of that category. These are the same idiots that complain about a card on TV because they don't know the fighters. And forget about those type of fans ever attending a local boxing card of up and comers.

They don't even realize that some of the greatest fights in boxing history can happen between two no name fighters. These dumb fight fans also tend to be seriously addicted to seeing knockouts as the end all of boxing.

But the fans are not my only problem. The thing that irks me more is the disgraceful lack of knowledge by some of the most recognized boxing announcers. These guys do this for a living and show no shame in admitting they never heard of a guy ranked in the top 5. God, if someone paid me good money to just comment on boxing matches I'd sure as hell make sure I knew what I was commenting about. There's too many sources with the internet today to just remain ignorant.
