-- During 2004-2008, the division sucked. And now? We have these names: -Wladimir -Vitali -Haye -Arreola -Povetkin -Chambers -Adamek -Tua
It's bad - but it's showing signs of life. Haye, Adamek and Arreola are breathing some excitement into the division. They're all exciting to watch and have a good fan-base. Povetkin, with his volume-punching style is very watchable too. The problem has been that no-one can challenge the Klitschko's and that Wlad, in particular, has a style which is boring ro watch, albiet very effective. Even if these guys can't beat either brother, they should at least provide some exciting fights.
Not sure about Arreola he's just fat Haye and Adamek are Cruisers who feel they have what it takes in the division i.e. if cruisers have what it takes to dominate the division its ****! Excuse me Evander please
I think the current division is better than the 2004-2008 division, and better than the 1980s heavyweight division. It is also toe-to-toe with the 1950s.
Believe me, I loathe it when fighters like Arreola and Solis can't be bothered getting into decent shape. As far as I'm concerned, they don't deserve to be champions. Having said that, Arreola is exciting to watch and has pretty good power. Even with his rolls of fat, he brings something to the division (which is probably a sad indictment of the divisions talent level). Haye is a natural 220lbs. If he fails at Heavyweight, it definitely won't be because of his size imo. The Arreola fight will prove if Adamek is a legitimate threat to the Klitschko's. Now, the Heavyweight division isn't rich in talent by any means but at least there's a few fighters worth watching who can give us some compelling fights. That's a start.
Yes it's that bad. -Wladimir: Good fighter, dull style. Can't fight the next best fighter, because it's his brother. Therefore no true champ can be crowned. -Vitali: See Wladimir, but subtract the dull style part. -Haye: Had promise, but barely fights. -Arreola: fat dude who sucks, but for some reason gets on hbo. -Povetkin: also sucks, had an opportunity to fight for belt for 2 years now, but is to scared to take it. -Chambers: fat dude who sucks but can't get on hbo. -Adamek: meh. -Tua: a 90's guy who barely fights. On top of the lack of good contenders, getting them to actually fight each other is what makes the division go from suckish to super-suckish.
I agree with this. Though with tv networks reluctant to show most title fights, it's hard for fans to get into the heavyweights now adays. HBO and other networks make little money off the Klitschko's now because of their boring style. So they just dropped them entirely it seems.
Your argument defeats the whole "the HW division is ****" myth. Joe Louis usually makes it in the top 3 of HW ATG lists. He fought 17 HW's by today's standards in his career, the rest were cruiserweights. Patterson would be a cruiser and stay at cruiser today. Ali struggled with two cruisers, Douglas and Cooper (who wouldn't land anything meaningful on either Klitschko). In the glorious 90's Holyfield came up from cruiser and lost his title to a former LHW who was then knocked out by a 45 year old who needed a gift decision against Schulz who would barely be a top ten contender today. Haye is naturally bigger than Louis or Frazier, but if it turns out that he actually has the goods at HW, the division is ****, because he fought at cruiser??
There's nothing wrong with it. The 00s would have had a hard time following the 90s regardless of who was fighting. The division picked up towards the end of the decade anyway, there have been plenty of quality fighters. The only complainers are Americans who will only be happy if guys like Kevin Johnson, Eddie Chambers or James Toney are the undisputed champ
