Martin tried to get a fight with Fitz after the second Jeffries Fitzsimmons fight. Fitz declined, saying that he could make more money fighting exhibitions with Jeffries. I suspect that Fitz realised that he would never be champion again (unless of course they created a lightheavyweight division).

I largely agree. Not to say that the time didn't put goodly weight on aggression and finishing strongly, but Greggians had gotten fixated on those aspects, especially aggression.

I tend to see Johnson-Hart as something that should either have been a draw or a Johnson win; the decision for Hart was a bit spiteful of Johnson. Johnson showed more skill and landed more punches; Hart was more aggressive, the harder puncher, and did well in the last few rounds. The fight, best as I can tell, was about evenly divided between Hart rounds, even/debatable rounds, and Johnson rounds, but when rounds went Johnson's way they did so by a bigger margin than when they went Harts way.
